Jeremiah Sackett
Father | Henry Sackett (1710/11-1790) |
Mother | Elizabeth Clifford (c 1709-1786) |
Jeremiah Sackett, son of Henry Sackett and Elizabeth Clifford, was baptized at Birchington, KentG, on 18 March 1749/50.1 He died aged 89 in St Peter in Thanet, KentG, on 17 July 18382 and was buried there on 21 July 1838.5,6 He married at St Lawrence in ThanetG on 7 January 1779, Hannah Newing, daughter of Margaret Newing.3,4 Hannah was born about 1761.7 She died aged 55 in St Peter in ThanetG on 13 July 1816 and was buried there on 17 July 1816.6,8
Jeremiah signed the parish register at St Lawrence ChurchG on 22 July 1783 as churchwarden.9
Jeremiah made his will in Northwood, St Lawrence in Thanet, KentG, on 12 March 1838, naming as beneficiaries his sons Benjamin and Edward, his grandson Benjamin Sackett Cox, his brother Edward, and his great-niece Ann Robson Darby.10 Jeremiah owned three adjoining houses at Sackett's Hill, St Peter's. He left these, one each to his sons Benjamin and Edward, and the third to his sons jointly. He also owned three houses at Northwood, one which he occupied, and two which were untenanted. It would appear that Jeremiah's brother Edward lived with Jeremiah, as did their great niece, Ann Robson Darby, who served as housekeeper. Jeremiah left the house "nearest the Queen's highway" to his grandson Benjamin Sackett Cox, Benjamin to pay a sum of £6 to Ann Robson Darby. The other two houses were left to Jeremiah's sons, Benjamin and Edward, on condition that they allow Jeremiah's brother, Edward ("who cannot long survive me"), and great niece, Ann Darby, to live in the middle house. They were also to support the aged Edward and Ann with weekly maintenance payments.
Of Jeremiah and Hannah's twelve children only two, Benjamin and Edward, survived their parents. Nine children died in infancy or childhood. A daughter, Hannah, lived to adulthood and was married with two children, but died aged 22.
