Thomas Sackett the elder of St Peter in Thanet
Thomas Sackett, of St Peter in Thanet, Kent, was born say 1530. He was buried at St Peter in ThanetG on 26 March 1595.2 He married about 1555, Joane ___.1 She was buried at St Peter in ThanetG on 19 December 1593.3
Thomas made his will at St Peter in ThanetG on 30 March 1594.4 He named as beneficiaries his sons, Thomas and George, and his daughters, Anne and Mildred. Thomas's description of himself in his will as a labourer suggests that he was not a wealthy man. However, the fact of his making a will at all, and the bequests to his children, define him as a landowner and suggest that he was a man of some substance. He left his tenement and lands in St Peter's to his elder son Thomas. He left his younger son George a sum of £12. He left a cow to his elder daughter Anne and five ewes and a lamb to his younger daughter Mildred. Anne and Mildred were also left various specified household items which were to be valued, with additional sums of money to be paid to each up to a value of £5. Also named in his will was a godson, John Sackett, to whom he left £1. This was very probably his grandson, John the son of Thomas the younger. The will was proved in the Archdeaconry Court of CanterburyG on 2 June 1596.
Thomas died in the same year as, but probably a few months before, the birth of his grandson Simon who was to emigrate to the New World.
