William attended Jessop Road School, Lambeth, LondonG, from ages three to seven, being admitted on 7 October 1895 and leaving on 30 June 1900. The family was living at 25 Milkwood Road in 1895. William's guardian in 1899 was recorded as another William Sackett, of 24 Kemmerton Road, probably the boy's uncle.10

Was taken to No. 2 General Hosp at Havre where he remained 10 days where a treptioning ?uration [trephination] was performed and some pieces of bone removed. He was then taken to the Royal City of Dublin Hospital where he remained 9 weeks. An operation was done there to remove a small piece of metal from behind l. ear. He was then discharged Hospital & returned to this unit. He was boarded 27 Jan in Winchester & classified C3. Causation GS Wound, caused by Active Service. Stamped Labour Corps Record Office 2 Oct 1917. (contd) There is still a considerable depression at the site of the fracture, l. frontal region. He is quite unfit for any exertion and gets quite giddy. No signs of paralysis & no history of it. Sight and hearing both good. Inability to earn a livelihood = ½. Discharged permanently unfit.

London SW1, 4 Sep 1917, [handwritten letter] Sir, I am directed to inform you that an application has been received from The Secretary Admiralty for the release from military service of No 282319 Pte E L Sackett 616th H S Employment Coy in order that he may return to his civil employment as a Clerk & it has been decided to sanction his release provided he is willing & whether he is fit for General Service or not. I am, therefore, to request that you will issue immediate instructions for him to be brought before a Standing Invaliding Board in accordance with ACI 1199 of 1917 with a view to determining his eligibility for transfer to Class W Reserve or discharge & that in accordance with the recommendation of the board you will effect his discharge or transfer to Class W Reserve as the case may be & dispatch him to The Secretary, Admiralty, Contract Dept, Whitehall, London SW1. It must be clearly explained to the soldier that if he elects to accept this employment he will not be entitled to the special rates of pay & allowances referred to in AC1 1989 of 1916 & that he will only receive the Civil Wages which the Department are prepared to pay him. Also in the household was Albert Taylor, 33, and his wife Annie, 33, who was probably the nursemaid.7
