John Sackett, mariner, was born in Garlinge, Margate, Kent^G, in 1785.^1,2 His parents have not been identified. He died aged 80 in Margate^G in 1866^3,4 and was buried at Zion Chapel, Margate^G, on 3 April 1866.³ He married at St Peter in Thanet, Kent^G, on 9 May 1811, Sarah Tucker.⁵ She was born about 1780.² She died aged 68 in Thanet^G,6 and was buried at St John in Thanet^G on 17 February 1848.⁷
     A record for John in the 1841 census has not been found. He may have been at sea. His wife Sarah, 60+, and daughter Elizabeth, 15+, were living in St John in Thanet^G.⁸
     John Sackett, then of Margate, was issued a merchant seaman's ticket on 4 January 1845. He worked as a seaman on voyages in 1845, 1846, and 1851. The detailed record reveals that he was literate, 5' 8¼" in height, had light brown hair, a fair complexion, and light blue eyes. He had first gone to sea as an apprentice in 1802.⁹

Elizabeth Sackett, daughter of John Sackett and Sarah Tucker, was born in St John in Thanet, Kent^G, in 1822^2,1 and baptized at St John in Thanet^G on 28 March 1822.³ She was unmarried. She died aged 65 in Margate^G in 1886⁴ and was buried at Zion Chapel, Margate^G, on 7 December 1886.⁵
