Joseph Sacket, husbandman of Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, son of William Sacket and Hannah Graves, was born in WestfieldG on 25 July 16901,2,3,4,5 and baptized at the Church of Christ, WestfieldG, on 27 July 1690.6 He died aged 66 in WestfieldG on 8 November 1756.1,7,8 He married about 1713, Abigail Bigelow, daughter of Jonathan Bigelow and Rebecca Shepard.1,9 Abigail was baptized on 2 November 1690.10 She died aged about 85 in WestfieldG on 28 February 1776.7,8,11
Joseph made his will at WestfieldG on 8 March 1756, naming as beneficiaries his wife Abigail, his sons Jesse and Erastus, and his daughters Beulah Dewey and Abigal Smith. He left to his wife the use of half of his house, barn, and home lot, the other half presumably going to his sons. He left his sons five shillings each and his joiner's tools. His daughters Beulah and Abigail were each to receive £8, half of his movables and half of his livestock. Not named in Joseph's will was his daughter Hannah who, by the date of the will, was married to Jacob Noble and was living in Westfield with their young children. This unlikely omission may be the result of an error in the transcription of the will reproduced in The Sacketts of America.1

Jonathan was one of the founding members of the Congregational Church in Warren. In 1750 he was appointed to "supply the church with preaching" and it was probably at his home six years later that the organisation of the church was finally achieved with the founding, covenanting, members attending the first "gathering" of the Church on 22 September 1756. In the following year he was appointed to a committee to select a minister.17,18,19
Jonathan made his will in Kent, Litchfield County, ConnecticutG, on 12 June 1772, naming as beneficiaries his wife Anne, and his sons Justus, Jonathan and Reuben.1 He left the use of half his house, barn, and lot to his wife Anne during her widowhood, and also left her two cows, ten sheep, his riding mare, and all household goods. He left his son Justus half the house and barn, oxen, and livestock, subject to an adjusting payment to his brother Jonathan. Jonathan was also to receive a cash payment from his brother Reuben. The transcript of the will (which may have been abbreviated) does not state Reuben's inheritance.
Jonathan's widow Anne made her will in Litchfield County, ConnecticutG, in June 1783, naming as beneficiaries her sons Justus and Reuben, and her grandsons William Sackett, Filer Sacket, Jesse Sackett and Almeron Sacket. Her son Justus was appointed executor. She left her estate in shares of one-third to each of her sons Justus and Reuben, and one-third to her grandsons William, Filer, Jesse, and Almon, sons of her deceased son Jonathan, the grandsons' one-third to be split half to William, Filer, and Jesse, and half to Almon.

Children of Jonathan Sacket and Anne Filer

47. Jonathan Sacket, 1696–1773, of Westfield, Mass., and of the towns of Hebron and Kent (now Warren) in Conn., son of (9) William and Hannah Graves Sacket, was married in February, 1722, to Abigail Ashley, who died before the end of that year. On Jan. 28, 1725, he was married to Ann Filer, daughter of Zebulun Filer and his wife Experience Strong*. Jonathan Sacket was born and grew to manhood in the town of Westfield. Immediately after his marriage to Abigail Ashley he took possession of a small farm at Hebron, Conn., which he had purchased the previous year. There is some uncertainty as to just when he removed from Hebron to Kent. The records of Kent show that in the year 1745, "Jonathan Sacket, of Hebron," purchased from one Joseph Fuller, certain lands in that town, and that in 1749 he purchased from one Joseph Phillips another tract in same town. These records also show that in 1749 he conveyed certain lands in the town of Kent to his son, Jonathan Sacket, Jr.

Windsor, 29 July 1741. Last Monday we had the Melancholy news of the Death of the Worthy Capt. Roger Newberry who went from this Town on the Expedition. He was well descended. The Honorable Major Benjamin Newberry, that had adventured his Life in his Country's Service in the Indian war, and sate several years att the Council board, was his Grandfather. Capt. Benjamin Newberry, who died of Sickness in the Expedition formed against Canada in 1709, was his father.
This Gentleman had a Liberal Education Bestowed upon him which he was careful to Improve, and was an accomplished mathematician and Good Historian. He always carryed about with him a Lively Sense of the Divine providence and of man's accountableness to his Maker for all his tho'ts, words, and actions, and gave his constant attendance on the Worship of God in the Public and Private Exercises of it, was Just in his Dealings, a Sure friend, and faithful Monitor.
He had a very Quick and Clear apprehension of things, a solid Judgement and Tenaceous memory; his Discourse and Conversation was affable and Instructive and so Peculiarly winning that most were his Real friends as were acquainted with him. His mind was formed for Business, which he followed with an Indefatigable aplycation, by which he not only discharged to Good Acceptance the public Trusts that were put upon him, but also advanced his own Estate.
In May 1740, he being then a member of the Generall Assembly, was picht upon by the Governor and Councill, yea he had the suffrage of the Assembly to Invite him to Lead one company of the Troops from this Collony in this Expedition.
He was att the Taking of Botochico, from which fort two Days after he wrote a chearful Letter to his Wife, Expressing his Great Hopes of Taking the Town of Carthagena and thereby finishing the Expedition and opening a way for his Return.
Butt soon after this he was Taken Sick and Languished until the fifth of May, When he had almost completed the thirty-fifth year of his age, he not far from Jamaica Departed this Life, and wee Shall see his face no more untill the Sea gives up the Dead that are in it.
He hath Left his antient mother to Lament the Death of this her only Son. His own Widdow with seven small children, one att her Breast, a Family to mourne under this heavy Bereavement and Combat with the Difficulties of an unquiet World. (History of Windsor, Conn., vol. 1, pp. 244-5.)
