Emma Harriet Sackett
Father | William Francis Sackett (1831-1898) |
Mother | Elizabeth Ann Foord (c 1832-1905) |
Emma Harriet Sackett, daughter of William Francis Sackett and Elizabeth Ann Foord, was born in St Peter in Thanet, KentG, on 29 January 1857.1,2 Her birth was registered in the names of Harriet Emma and she was baptized as Harriet Emma at St Peter in ThanetG on 8 March 1857.3 She died aged 83 in ThanetG on 1 April 1940.4,5 As Emma Harriett Sackett, she married at Ebenezer Chapel, Ramsgate, KentG, on 27 January 1884, Frederick William Woodward, a house painter, son of Stephen Woodward and Sarah Hobday.6,7,8 Frederick was born in ThanetG in 1858.9 He died there aged 56 in 1914.10
In 1861 Emma was living at 4 Grays Cottages, Broadstairs, KentG, in the household of her parents William and Elizabeth, and was recorded in the census as Harriett E Sackett, aged 4, and born in Broadstairs, Kent.11
Harriet/Emma appeared twice in the 1871 census, being recorded in both her parents' and grandparents' households. In 1871 she was recorded as living at 1 Thanet Road, BroadstairsG, in the household of her parents William and Elizabeth, and was listed as Harriet Ann Sackett, a scholar, aged 14, and born in Broadstairs.12 She was listed in the same census living at Albion Street, BroadstairsG, and was recorded as Emma Sackett, a scholar, aged 13 and born in Broadstairs, in the household of her grandparents Francis and Hannah Sackett.13
In 1881 she was living at 10 Albert Place, St Peter in ThanetG, in the household of her uncle John Holley, a farm labourer, and was recorded as Ann Sackett, a dressmaker, unmarried, aged 24, and born in Broadstairs. Also in the household was her 13-year-old sister Annie.14
It would appear that, by 1881, Emma Harriet was known as Ann, having been recorded as Harriet Ann in one of the 1871 listings. That this Ann was the same as Emma Harriet would appear to be confirmed both by the fact that her younger sister Annie was living with her and also that her address in 1881 (10 Albert Place) was surely the same as the address from which she married in 1884 (10 Albert Cottages.)
In 1891 she was living at 2 Farley Cottages, St Peter in ThanetG, in the household of her husband Frederick, 32, a house decorator, and was recorded as Emma H Woodward, aged 34 and born in Broadstairs. Living with them were their children, Mabel, 3, and Gilbert, aged ten months.15
In 1901 she was living at 2 Farley CottagesG in the household of her husband Frederick, 42, a house decorator, and was recorded as E H Woodward, aged 43. Living with them were their children, Mabel, 13, and Gilbert, 10, and Emma's widowed mother Elizabeth, 69. Also in the household were Emma's sister Annie and brother-in-law Charles with their daughter Nellie.16
In 1911 she was living at 2 Farley CottagesG in the household of her husband Fredrick, 53, a house painter, and was recorded as Emma Woodward, aged 55. Living with them were their children, Mabel, 23, and Gilbert, aged 20.17
In 1921 she was living at 37 Upton Road, St Peter in ThanetG, and was recorded as Emma Harriet Woodward, head of household, widowed, aged 63. Her unmarried daughter Mabel, 33, and her unmarried sister-in-law Rosa Woodward, 54, were living with her.18
At the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, Harriet, now incapacitated, was living at 37 Upton RoadG. Her daughter Mabel and sister-in-law Rosa Woodward were living with her.19
In 1861 Emma was living at 4 Grays Cottages, Broadstairs, KentG, in the household of her parents William and Elizabeth, and was recorded in the census as Harriett E Sackett, aged 4, and born in Broadstairs, Kent.11

Sackett—Galletly
When Miss Mary Elizabeth Galletly was married at St. Augustine's Abbey Church, Ramsgate on Saturday, her headdress—a half-hat of imitation flowers—was that worn by her sister-in-law, Suk Fan, at her wedding at Hong Kong in March, this year.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. L. M. and the late Mr. G. Galletly, of 13 Grummock-avenue, Ramsgate. She was married to Mr. Malcolm Frank Sackett, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Sackett. of 76 Prospect-road, Minster.
The full-length dress of lace over net worn by the bride was designed by her and drawn from instructions by a friend, Miss Jose Wotton. It had a four-tiered skirt with scalloped edges and train. The bride carried a bouquet of pink carnations with trailing lilies of the valley and pink freesias.
She was attended by two friends, Miss Patricia Philpott, chief bridesmaid, and Miss Gillian Holloway. They wore ballerina-length dresses in white cotton, printed with lilac imitation broderie Anglaise. The dresses were princess style with scooped necklines and lilac velvet bows at the back with long streamers to the hem. The attendants carried posies of pale lilac carnations. pale pink roses, freesias and lilies of the valley.
The bride was given away by her brother Sqdn.-Ldr. G. E. G. Galletly, and Mr. Kenneth John Sackett, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Father Odilo Frelinx officiated at the service and Father Gregory Bish was organist.
