Lieutenant John Sackett, soldier and glazier, of New Haven, Connecticut, son of John Sackett of New Haven and Agnes Tinkham, was born in New HavenG on 30 April 1653.1,2,3,4,5 He died aged 50 in New HavenG on 6 November 17031,5,6 and was buried at the Grove Street Cemetery, New HavenG.8,9 He married about 1686, presumably in New HavenG, Mary Woodin, daughter of William Woodin and Sarah Clark.1,7 Mary was born about 1658.10,5 She was baptized at First Congregational Society, New HavenG, on 7 April 1689.5 She died aged 59 in New HavenG on 27 November 171711,12,5,13 and was buried at the Grove Street Cemetery, New HavenG.14
Like his father and many of his kinsmen [Lieut John Sackett] took a lively interest in military affairs. As soon as he had reached the required age he joined the New Haven military company and remained an active member of it to the day of his death. After serving several years as a private and non-commissioned officer, he was commissioned an Ensign and later a Lieutenant. The records of the General Court of Connecticut show that at a session held at Hartford May 14, 1696, a lease from certain Indians, for a considerable tract of land to John Sackett and others, was confirmed.

     John's name appears a number of times in the New Haven Ancient Town Records.15 At Town Meetings held on 27 November and 25 December 1682, he was granted land to build a house and shop to set up business as a glazier.16 He was listed in a town meeting report of 22 December 1712 (the same list having previously been exhibited in the General Assembly on 20 October 1704) as having been a proprietor of the town in 1685.17,18This detail is also recorded in Savage's Genealogical Dictionary.19 At a meeting on 28 April of that year John was chosen to be a "heyward [overseer of hedges] for the Governors quarter".20 At the same meeting he applied for a grant of land to compensate for the town's construction of a highway through his land at the plains.21 On 27 December 1686, the town discussed further the construction of this highway.22 By May 1688, John Sackett had become a Sergeant and was elected as a constable for the year.23 Land applications by John Sackett, now an Ensign, were made to town meetings in March and April 1698.24 In March 1703, he was appointed, with others, to be "a sizer to size the Land to be laid out."25 Atwater, in his History of the Colony of New Haven,26 lists John Sackett as having attained his highest rank, that of Lieutenant, in 1700.
     Lieut John Sackett died in 1703 but administration of his estate proved complicated and was not finally completed until after the death in 1717 of his widow Mary. An inventory of John's estate was taken on 25 December 1703. John's son-in-law Jonathan Alling was appointed administrator on 26 December 1717 by the Court of Probates of John's estate and of the estates of John's widow Mary and daughter Mary.

William Woodin, 16—?–1684, colonist, is first mentioned in New Haven records under date of 1643. He was married there October 5, 1650, to Sarah Allard, who died in 1693.

Exhibited to be added to the Inventory for A Crow barr 9/ and A set of harrowteeth £1 which make the whole inventory £546:6.9 to which must be added the new apprizement of sundry articles formerly apprized not now to be found, now Vallued to be £90:13:8 and for a Credit to the Estate £1-2-1 and also for profits on the Estate while In the widdows hands 13 year @ £2-10/- per annum makes £32-10-0

Jonathan Sackett, son of John Sackett of New Haven and Agnes Tinkham, was born in New Haven, ConnecticutG, on 6 June 1655.1,2,3,4,5 He died there aged 71 on 4 February 1726/27 and was buried at the Grove Street Cemetery, New HavenG.5,6,10,11 He married in New HavenG on 12 March 1717/18, Ruth Hotchkiss, daughter of John Hotchkiss and Elizabeth Peck.6,7,8,9 Ruth was born about 1688 and died aged 85 in New HavenG on 24 March 1773.5,6 After Jonathan's death, Ruth married second on 11 December 1728 Benjamin Dorman.5,6,12
     On 17 March 1656/57 Jonathan, "almost 2 yeares old', was treated for worms by John Winthrop the younger.13

Comments
Jonathan's age (62) upon marriage to Ruth Hotchkiss, suggests the possibility of his having been married previously. According to the Sacketts of America, Jonathan was married to Hannah ___, by whom he had five children: (SoA 74) Jonathan, (75) Richard, (76) Hannah, (77) John, and (78) Joseph. However, no records of a marriage to Hannah nor of the births of these children are found in Barbour's Collection of Vital Records of Connecticut, nor does Jacobus, Families of Ancient New Haven, have this family grouping.
     Weygant attributes the marriage of Jonathan Sackett and Ruth Hotchkiss to a supposed younger Jonathan (74). Despite a 33-year age difference, it would appear that the Jonathan of this marriage was the Jonathan Sackett born in 1655. Ruth's second marriage, to Benjamin Dorman in 1728, following the death of Jonathan at the age of 72 in 1727, tends to support this conclusion. It is concluded consequently that there was no such younger Jonathan Sackett.
     Of the other children, (76) Hannah appears to be the same as the Hannah baptized in 1694 by John and Mary (Woodin) Sackett, and (77) John the same as (72) John, baptized in 1699 by the same parents. No other record has been found of a Joseph (78). Jonathan's brother Joseph had a son Joseph in 1712 by his wife Sarah Denison. A confusion of the fathers' names, John, Jonathan, and Joseph, may have resulted from misinterpretation of the baptism records.
     Identification of the remaining child, (75) Captain Richard Sackett of New York, with parents Jonathan and Hannah, as stated in Sacketts of America, is unconfirmed by other records. Other than Weygant's statement that Richard was of New Haven, no record has been found linking him with this branch of the family.

Mary Sackett, daughter of John Sackett of New Haven and Agnes Tinkham, was born in New Haven, ConnecticutG, on 24 September 1657.1,2,3,4,5 She married in New HavenG on 12 August 1719 as his second wife, Sergt Benjamin Bradley, son of William Bradley and Alice Prichard.5,6,7 Benjamin was born in New HavenG on 8 April 16578 and baptized at the First Congregational Society, New HavenG, on 12 April 1657.8 He died between April 1728 and June 1728.8
     Mary was unusually old, at nearly 62, for a first marriage. However, her husband Benjamin, whose first marriage had lasted more than 40 years, was of similar age. A death record for Mary has not been found although she evidently predeceased Benjamin as he is recorded as having married for a third time.

20. Lieut. Joseph Sackett, 1660–17__, of New Haven, Conn., son of (5) John and Agnes Tinkham Sackett, was married about the year 1685 to his first wife, Anne. On May 18, 1710, he was married to his second wife, Hanna Denison, daughter of James Denison and his wife Bethiah Boykin. In 1794 the General Assembly of Connecticut, in reorganizing the militia for active service "against the common enemy." appointed "Sergeant Joseph Sackett to be Lieutenant of the soldiers raised in the county of New Haven for this service."
     He was administrator of the estates of his parents and served as such until July 8, 1712, when he filed his report and was discharged. On January 1, 1717, he was chosen by his nephew John Sackett, a minor son of Lieut. John Sackett, as his guardian.
     Jarvis Boykin, colonist, came from Charington in Kent, England, to Charlestown, Mass., in the year 1635. In 1639 he removed to New Haven, Conn., where in April 1643, his daughter Bethia was married to James Denison.
