Benjamin Watton Sackett
Father | Henry Sackett (1774-1862) |
Mother | Elizabeth Sackett (1778-1861) |
Benjamin Watton Sackett, Trinity House pilot, son of Henry Sackett and Elizabeth Sackett, was born on 18 March 1805 and baptized at St Peter in Thanet, KentG, on 21 April 1805.1 He died in Ramsgate, KentG, on 4 October 1881.2,3 He married first at St Peter in ThanetG on 27 February 1833, Lydia Hurst, daughter of Andrew Hurst and Elizabeth Hurst.4 Lydia was born about 17917 and died aged 80 in Shoreditch, MiddlesexG, on 28 January 1871.8,9 He married second in Dover, KentG, in 1871, Ann Dixon.5,6 She was born on 3 April 181410 and died aged 66 in ThanetG on 22 July 1880.10,11
Benjamin's first wife Lydia was admitted to the Bethlem Hospital, Southwark, LondonG, on 2 December 1836 suffering from a mental illness. She had previously been admitted to the hospital in 1822, before her marriage. She was discharged "well" in November 1837, but was re-admitted a year later in November 1838. There followed several further admissions. She was placed on the Incurable List in 1842.
She moved by 1849 to Rotherhithe where she lived with a sister, perhaps to be closer to the hospital. She moved to lodgings in Southwark in 1851. She was an in-patient at the hospital for much of this time.
Lydia was discharged from Bethlem Hospital in 1852, "her husband having made terms for her being taken care of in another asylum."
Records from the Bethlem Hospital (which had notoriously become known as "Bedlam" in consequence of its poor conditions) show that, in this period, and in regard to Lydia's treatment, patients were treated with compassion and professionalism, at least by the standards of knowledge of the day.12
In 1841 Lydia was living at Addington, Ramsgate, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Lydia Sackett, of independent means, aged 50 and born in Kent. It is assumed that Benjamin was at sea at the date of the census.13
In 1851 Benjamin was living at Hawkesbury Street, Dover, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Benjamin W Sackett, a pilot, head of household, married, aged 45, and born at St. Peter's. Living with him were Ann Dixon, 35, an unmarried servant, and Elizabeth Dixon, a widowed visitor aged 77, presumably Ann's mother.14,15
In 1861 he was living at Hawkesbury Street, DoverG, and was recorded as Benjamin W Sackett, a Trinity pilot, head of household, married, aged 55, and born in Ramsgate. Living with him was Ann Dixon, a 46-year-old unmarried servant.16
In 1871 he was living at 9 Hawkesbury Street, DoverG, and was recorded as Benjamin W Sackett, a pilot, head of household, a widower, aged 65, and born in Ramsgate. Also in the household were Ann Dixon, housekeeper, unmarried, aged 57, and born at Eastry, Kent, and his visiting niece Jane Moore, a widow, aged 45.17
Benjamin was appointed administrator of the estate of his wife Lydia by letters of administration granted in the Principal Probate Registry, London, on 13 February 1871. Lydia's estate was valued at less than £300.9
Benjamin was appointed administrator of the estate of his brother Richard Henry Sackett by letters of administration granted at the Probate Registry, CanterburyG, on 2 September 1879.18
In 1881 Benjamin was living at 63 Addington Street, Ramsgate, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Benjamin W Sackett, retired pilot, head of household, a widower, aged 76, and born at St Peter's, Isle of Thanet. Also in the household was Jane Moore, housekeeper, a widow.19
Benjamin's will, made in RamsgateG on 4 February 1879, was proved at Canterbury on 5 December 1881. Named as beneficiaries were his wife Ann, his brothers Richard, David and James, his sister Phoebe, and his nephew John Hogbin. The value of the personal estate was some £6,700. Benjamin had no children. Benjamin's wife, who was to have been the main beneficiary of the will, predeceased Benjamin, as also did his brother Richard. Codicils to the will re-divided the estate, with Benjamin's sister Phoebe becoming the main beneficiary.20

Statement of Medical Attendant: "Mania. Restless excitable and very discontented, rambles in her conversation and talks in a very unreasonable manner but is not at all incoherent and can always talk reasonably and rationally enough when in the mood. She has no particular delusions but talks at random about the bad conduct of her family towards her but this it appears is only the control that they have thought it necessary to exercise over her strange vagaries and occasionally violent conduct. She is at times very flighty, will dance and sing, and if remonstrated with will say that there is no harm in it. If not closely watched will steal food from the other patients who have not sense enough to take care of themselves and when detected will be very abusive occasionally noisy at night.
June. For some weeks there was considerable depression. She continued very silent and unsound scarcely speaking and affording a remarkable contrast to her former state of garrulity and restlessness.
Sept. A nearer approach to a happy medium has been made and she is now orderly cheerful and well conducted. It is however a question whether her mind is not to some extent permanently weakened.
Nov 28th. Since she left the hospital she has been getting into numerous scrapes quarrelling with the people with whom she lodged continually changing her lodgings pawning her clothes and getting into debt in all directions. At last she became violent and disturbed the neighbourhood so much that it became necessary to call in the police. She is now very much excited and threatens her friends who have brought her here declaring that there is nothing the matter with her.
Decr. She continues very much excited and mischievous tears her clothes and dresses herself up in a strange manner but still her conversation is rational and she gives a plausible excuse for her violent and mischievous conduct.
1852 Jany. She has been going on tolerably quietly for some weeks past and though the experience of the past forbids the hope that this would continue if again at liberty an unwillingness was felt to discharge her uncured without at any rate giving her another three months residence but her husband has made terms for her being taken care of in another asylum and does not therefore wish for the time to be extended.

Richard Henry Sackett
Father | Henry Sackett (1774-1862) |
Mother | Elizabeth Sackett (1778-1861) |
Richard Henry Sackett, baker and confectioner, son of Henry Sackett and Elizabeth Sackett, was born in St Peter in Thanet, KentG, on 3 September 1807 and baptized there on 4 October 1807.1,2 He died aged 71 in MargateG on 12 August 18793,4 and was buried at Zion Chapel, MargateG, on 15 August 1879.6 He married at St George, Ramsgate, KentG, on 23 November 1830, Elizabeth Dadd, widow.5 Elizabeth was born in Elham, KentG, about 1806.2 She was probably the Elizabeth Sackett who died aged 69 in Maidstone, KentG, in 1875.7
Richard's wife Elizabeth was admitted to the Bethlem Hospital, Southwark, LondonG, on 15 June 1832 suffering from peritonitis and post-natal depression. She had attempted suicide by taking arsenic—in a grim echo of the death of her mother who had committed suicide by hanging when deranged after her husband had been run over and killed by a wagon. Elizabeth remained in the hospital for six months until discharged on 25 December when she was declared "well".
Elizabeth was again admitted to the hospital some twelve years later on 30 August 1844. Her daughter Emma had died aged eleven of tuberculosis a year earlier. Elizabeth suffered delirium at the time of the death, and had since become delusional and suicidal. Severe headaches were treated with "leeches, blisters, and purgations". After a five-month stay, she was declared "well" and discharged on 24 January 1845.
The respite was brief, and Elizabeth was re-admitted less than two months later on 13 March, staying in hospital for nearly fifteen months until discharged on 5 June 1846, this time with the less optimistic declaration of "uncured".
Described as "affectionate" and "liberal" and "always of a good disposition" before becoming ill, she was now "constantly talking and hollering, tearing her hair out, destroying her clothes, wringing her hands," and was suicidal, "talking of hanging".
Whether Elizabeth's condition subsequently improved is not known, but she is recorded living at home with her husband Richard over the next twenty-five years.
Records from the Bethlem Hospital (which had notoriously become known as "Bedlam" in consequence of its poor conditions) show that, in this period, and in regard to Elizabeth's treatment, patients were treated with compassion and professionalism, at least by the standards of knowledge of the day.8
In 1841 Richard was living at King Street, St John, Margate, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Richard Sackett, a baker, aged 30 [ages rounded down to nearest five years] and born in Kent. Living with him was his wife Elizabeth, aged 35, and their daughter Emma, aged nine. Also in the household were a male servant, a female servant, and a baker's apprentice.9
In 1851 Richard was living at 21 King Street, MargateG, and was recorded in the census as Richard Henry Sackett, a baker employing one man, head of household, married, aged 43, and born in St Peter's. Living with him were his wife Elizabeth, aged 45 and born in Elham, and an 18-year-old male servant.10
In 1861 he was living at 21 King Street, MargateG, and was recorded as Richard Sackett, a baker employing one man, head of household, married, aged 52, and born in St Peter's. Living with him was his wife Elizabeth, aged 55 and born in Elham.11
In 1871 he was living at 75 King Street, MargateG, and was recorded as Richard H Sackett, a baker, head of household, married, aged 63, and born in St Peter's. Living with him were his wife Elizabeth, aged 65 and born in Elham, and a 17-year-old female servant.12
Richard died intestate. Letters of administration of his estate were granted at the Probate Registry, CanterburyG, on 2 September 1879 to his brother Benjamin Watton Sackett. Richard's estate was valued at less than £100.4
Richard was named as a beneficiary in his brother Benjamin's will made in RamsgateG on 5 December 1881.13

"Elizabeth Sackett admitted 15 Jun 1832, age 27.
A Married Woman with 1 Child who was never disordered in her mind before.
This attack commenced 2 months ago. Began with lowness after the birth of her child, had p... peritonitis .. subsequent debility expected her speedy dissollution, sometimes unmanageable, took 2py worth of Arsenic.
Her Mother said to have been in a similar state destroyed herself.
State of Health / Very tolerable.
Wife of a Baker 43 Queen St Ramsgate.
Diseased Ideas / Very despondent."
Medical Statement / From Mr T Rhodes Surgeon Ramsgate June 6th 1832. Gentlemen / "Respecting the Case of Elizth Sackett, I was first consulted by her friends on the 1st of April of this year. I then found her in an extremely low state approaching in some degree to Hypochondriasism; from the particulars I then rec'd was that she was confined of her first child sometime about Christmas, and had a very favourable time, but subsequently she was seized with p... peritonitis which she had in a very violent degree the debilitating effects of which she was lingering under when I first saw her and also a consciousness of her speedy dissolution. During the short time of my attendance, which was about a few days, I put her upon some treatment by which her health was much improved but I suppose, dreading the expenses of a Doctor's bill, she did not wish me to continue my visits any longer. On the 12th of April I was again requested to see her and then found my patient in a state of Melancholy Insanity with occasional moments of reason, and from that time to the present she has been getting worse and on one occasion swallowed two pennyworth of Arsenic, but full vomiting immediately taking place it did not appear to leave any traces of derangment. I have this day understood that this patient's Mother was in somewhat a similar state, brought on by excessive grief by her husband being killed by a Waggon going over his body; and also other family misfortunes occurring that she committed suicide."
