Benjamin's obituary
Death of an Aged Man.
Mr. Benjamln F. Sackett Dies in Appomattox.
The sad intelligence of the death of Mr Benjamin F. Sackett, who died yesterday morning in Appomattox, reached the city yesterday, and was a grievous shock to his relatives and friends. Deceased was born in the State of Connecticut 87 years ago, and, though of such advanced age, retained to the last that strength and vigor of intellect that distinguished him throughout his long and useful career. Early in life he removed from his northern home and located at New Orleans, where he resided for many years.
At one time in his life, he made his home in Lynchburg, and one of the old landmarks, Sackett's Hill, now stands as a monument to his memory. Many years ago the building on the site of the present Hurt's Mill was used by Mr. Sackett for storing lumber. The latter years of his life, he passed in the county of Appomattox, where for several terms he filled the position of deputy treasurer. Mr. Sackett was a member of the Presbyterian church, and a man of consistent piety. His bright mind and store of knowledge rendered him a most interesting conversationalist, while his ready wit and courteous manner won him friends wherever he went.
He leaves two children—Mr. Charles H. Sackett, a prominent lawyer of this city, and Mrs. George T. Peers, wife of the county clerk of Appomattox.
The remains will be brought to the city for interment this afternoon by the 2.10 Norfolk and Western train.

John Sackett MD
Father | Major Buell Sackett (1763-1840) |
Mother | Sally Earl Beach (1761-1815) |
John Sackett MD, son of Major Buell Sackett and Sally Earl Beach, was born on 31 July 1785.1 He died aged 41 in Nassau County, New York StateG, on 17 February 1827.1,2 He married first say 1810, ___ ___. He married second in Colchester, Chittenden County, VermontG, on 10 May 1818, Lorrain Lawrence.1,3 She was born in Essex, VermontG, about February 1794.4 She died in VermontG on 27 August 1879.5
In 1876, Loraine applied for a pension as the widow of a veteran of the War of 1812. She claimed that she and John had married on 17 May 1814, four years before their actual marriage, apparently to show that they were married before the ending of the war in 1815. Her application was rejected as she had not provided proof of the marriage date. The law was changed in 1878 and, on 24 April 1878, Loraine filed a new declaration, this time stating the marriage date as 17 May 1816, still two years before the actual date but within the new rules. The application was accepted, regard being had to her already having received bounty land and to the testimony of John's uncle Isaac Sackett, given in the claim for the bounty land, that he had attended the marriage ceremony. Loraine was granted a pension of $8 a month backdated to 9 March 1878, the date of the new Act.
Loraine stated in the pension applications that neither she nor John Sackett had been previously married. However, the birth of John Buel Sackett in 1812, if correctly assigned to Dr John Sackett, suggests that Dr John would have had an earlier marriage. Records of such a marriage and of John Buel Sackett's birth have not yet been found.2

Deaths
In Bennettsburg, N.Y., Sept. 10th, Mrs. Gratia Sackett aged 82 years.
She became a member of the Baptist church in early life, and was permitted to witness the conversion of her husband and a large family of children. A mother in Israel has gone to her reward.
—The Examiner and Chronicle, New York, NY, 18 Nov 1869, p 5
Died, near Bennettsburg, at the residence of her son, Sept. 10th 1869, Gratia Sackett, aged 82 years 7 months and 24 days.
The subject of this notice, whose maiden name was Gratia Perkins, was born at South Kingston, R.I. At about the age of 14 years she was hopefully converted and united with the Baptist church at that place, where she lived until a short time previous to her marriage, in 1814, to Philo Sackett of Columbia Co., N.Y. In 1828 they removed to the town of Hector, now Schuyler Co., where she has since resided. She lived nearly 50 years with her companion when death separated them in 1863. It was a great satisfaction to the aged parents to see all their children pleasantly settled near them, and entertaining a like precious hope in the blessed Redeemer. But their labours are ended and they have entered their rest. Truly "the memory of the just is blessed."
