     Lydia was named as a beneficiary in her father's will made in Westfield^G on 10 February 1841 and proved at the Springfield Probate Court on 1 March 1842. She was left a sum of $100 and was to share equally with her sister Olive the household furniture after their mother's lifetime interest.³

     In 1860 he was living in Springfield^G in the household of his parents Noah and Clarissa, and was recorded as Justin Ashley, a sash and blind maker, aged 28. Living with him were his wife Harriet, 21, and their son Gilbert, aged one month.³
     Justin shared, with his brothers, Gilbert and Joseph, in the inheritance of their father's estate. Their father Noah had died intestate. Justin was appointed, with his mother, as an administrator of the estate by the Hampden County Probate Court on 12 July 1870. With the assistance of commissioners appointed by the Court, agreement was reached for the division of the estate among Noah's three sons, allowing for their mother's right of dower in the form of a house and land at Carew Street, Springfield. The arrangement was ratified by the Court on 7 July 1874.⁴
