Clarissa Bagg Sackett
Father | Elijah Sackett (1784-1851) |
Mother | Cynthia Sackett (1784-1862) |
Clarissa Bagg Sackett, daughter of Elijah Sackett and Cynthia Sackett, was born in Westfield, Hampden County, MassachusettsG, on 30 July 1812.1,2 She died aged 89 in Springfield, Hampden CountyG, on 24 November 19013 and was buried at Springfield CemeteryG.2,5 She married in West SpringfieldG, probably in 1830, Noah Pease Ashley, son of Noah Ashley and Abigail Pease.4 Noah Pease Ashley was born in West SpringfieldG on 26 March 1808.2,6 He died aged 62 in SpringfieldG on 15 May 1870 and was buried at Springfield CemeteryG.2,7
In 1850 Clarissa was living in SpringfieldG in the household of her husband Noah P Ashley, 42, a laborer, and was recorded in the census as Clarrissa Ashley, aged 38 and born in Massachusetts. Living with them were their children, Justin, 18, Gilbert, 13, and Joseph, aged six.8
In 1860 she was living in SpringfieldG in the household of her husband Noah Ashley, 52, a farmer, and was recorded as Clarrissa Ashley, aged 48. Living with them were their children, Joseph, 16, and Justin, 28, with his wife Harriet, 21, and their son Gilbert, aged one month.9
In 1870 she was living in SpringfieldG and was recorded as Clarasa Ashley, aged 58. Her son Joseph, 26, was living with her.10
In 1880 she was living at Carew Street, SpringfieldG, and was recorded as Clarissa B Ashley, aged 67.11
Noah Ashley died intestate. On their petition, his widow Clarissa and son Justin were appointed administrators of the estate by the Hampden County Probate Court on 12 July 1870. Sons Gilbert and Joseph were also named as interested parties. Appraisers were appointed by the Court and they valued the real estate, at Carew Street, Springfield, at $4,863 and personal estate at $203. On 7 March 1871, the Court allowed the items comprising the personal estate to Clarissa as necessaries for herself. Some land was sold by the heirs but the estate was not settled by April 1873 when Joseph Ashley, then of Agawam, petitioned the Court to order the administrators to settle the account. (The delay may have been the result of Justin Ashley having removed to Brattleboro, Vermont.) In May 1874, the Court appointed Commissioners to determine and seek agreement on a widow's dower to be assigned to Clarissa. A tract of land with buildings on the southerly side of Carew Street was set aside as a dower for Clarissa, and this was agreed by her sons. Subject to Clarissa's right of dower, sons Justin, of Brattleboro, Gilbert, of Springfield, and Joseph C, of Agawam, were each to receive one-third of the estate. Commissioners partitioned the estate at Carew Street, setting off a defined tract to Justin and Gilbert and awarding them an adjusting payment of $200 from Joseph. A further defined tract was set off for Joseph. The arrangements for the widow's dower and the division among the sons was agreed by all parties and was ratified by the Court on 7 July 1874.12
By announcement in the Springfield Republican newspaper on 24 November 1900, Clarissa was named for non-payment of taxes. She was to pay $27.01 by 4 December, failing which her house and land at 179 Carew Street, SpringfieldG, would be sold that day at public auction. It is to be hoped that the then 88-year-old widow was spared this disproportionate threat and that she was able to celebrate Christmas with a roof over her head.13
