Byron Eugene Sackett, son of Jonathan Henry Sackett and Jane Bell Powers, was born in Meredosia, Morgan County, IllinoisG, on 2 January 1926.1 He died aged 94 in IllinoisG on 6 April 2020 and was buried at Upper Alton Cemetery, Alton, Madison County, IllinoisG.1,2 He married in AltonG on 31 March 1951, Darlene Taylor, daughter of Clyde Taylor and Minnie Rollings.1 Darlene was born in Chicago, Cook County, IllinoisG, on 15 November 1929.1 She died aged 94 in Godfrey, Madison County, IllinoisG, on 16 July 2024.1

Pfc. Byron Sackett Hurt in Action
Less than two weeks after his nineteenth birthday, Pfc. Byron E. Sackett of the 275th Infantry Regiment was wounded in France on Jan. 15. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan H. Sackett of 3010 Edgewood avenue. The parents recelved a telegram from the War Department Feb. 6 informing them their son had been wounded.
A letter written on Feb. 1 in France has been received by the parents, the only one they have had from Pfc. Sackett since he went overseas. He said he was all right and described his surroundings as "fine" but said nothing of having been hurt. He said he had had his feet frost-bitten. in December soon after arriving in France.
Pfc. Sackett attended Alton High School. The family moved to Pittsfield later and he graduated there. He was born at Meredosia. Before entering the army he attended Alton Vocational School. He entered the army May 16, 1944, and had trained at Camp Robinson, Little Rock, Ark. He went overseas last November after being stationed a short while at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Sackett-Taylor Wedding Friday, March 30
Miss Darlene Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Taylor of 2121 Country Club drive, became the bride of Byron Sackett, son of and Mrs. Jonathan H. Sackett, 3010 Edgewood avenue, Friday, March 30, at 2 o'clock in Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. Curtis Martin officiatIng. Glenn Sackett was best man for his brother and Mrs. Maurice Elfgen, twin sister of the bride, was matron of honor. The wedding was attended by members of the immediate families. The double ring ceremony was used by the officiating clergyman.
Miss Taylor and her sister wore suits of blue and matching accessories. A corsage of white carnations was pinned to the bride's shoulder, and yellow carnations formed a corsage worn by the matron of honor.
A reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, and later Mr. Sackett and bride left Carbondale where they are residing at 310 South Graham avenue.
Graduates of Alton High School, Mr. and Mrs. Sackett are students at Southern Illinois University. Mrs. Sackett will receive her degree in June but Mr. Sackett, who served in the Army for two years, will complete his studies next winter.

Byron Eugene Sackett, 94, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2020, at home with his family by his side. Byron was born on January 2, 1926 in Meredosia, Illinois. His parents, Jonathan and Jane (Powers) Sackett and siblings Josephine Pennock, Mary Carr and Glen Sackett preceded him in death.
He served as a First Sergeant with the 15th Infantry from 1944-1946. Following his time in the Army, he enrolled at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale receiving a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry and Education. There he met Darlene Taylor. They were married on March 31, 1951 in Alton.
His first job upon graduation was as a research chemist for Celotex Corporation in Chicago. Upon moving back to the Alton area, he taught Science at Central Junior High School for a few years. After receiving his Masters degree in Media and Educational Administration he began his dream job for Alton Public Schools as their audio visual/media specialist. He introduced the teachers to video recording and computers, retiring in 1991.
He was an avid boater and water skier, teaching his wife, children and nieces to water ski on the Mississippi. Other interests included photography and videography. Those in his extended family believed he could fix anything, sometimes bringing him very challenging projects.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Darlene Sackett, daughter, Debbie Sackett, son, Richard Sackett, grandsons, Jamie and Kieran Moylan, sisters-in-law, Betty Taylor, Eilene Taylor and Violet Sackett and numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by two nephews Scott Rhodes and Ryan Aud.
A private graveside service was held at Upper Alton Cemetery on April 9. Memorials may be made to Oasis Women’s Center.

Darlene Sackett
Darlene Sackett, 94, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, in her apartment at Cedarhurst of Godfrey. She was born on November 15,1929, in Chicago, IL and was followed closely by her identical twin sister, Eilene. Darlene and Eilene joined older sister Betty, and brother, Charles. Their parents Clyde and Minnie (Rollings) Taylor were thrilled to have twins but faced difficult times weathering the Great Depression with four young children. They moved around southern Illinois and Kentucky eventually settling in Alton where all four children attended Alton High School.
Darlene met the “love of her life”, Byron Sackett at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Her first teaching job was at Milton Elementary in Alton. The couple lived in Collinsville, Chicago and Rolling Meadows, Illinois before returning to Alton to live near family. Darlene again worked for Alton Public Schools finishing her 35-year career at Gilson Brown School.
While raising a family, daughter, Debbie and son, Richard, Darlene obtained her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville. Both children attended Alton High School like their mother. Daughter, Debbie followed in her mother’s footsteps attending SIU-C and becoming a teacher.
Darlene and her twin, Eilene, were weekly volunteers at the Oasis Women’s Center and their thrift shop. They started when the center opened in 1978 and continued volunteering there for 35 years. Most often they scheduled overlapping shifts so they could spend their Sunday evenings together.
Darlene is survived by her daughter, Deborah Sackett of Portland, Oregon and son, Richard Sackett of Alton. She has two grandsons in Portland, Jamie and Kieran Moylan. Her older sister, Betty Taylor, niece Sherry Greening and nephew, Glenn Greening all live in Eugene, Oregon. She is very close with her twin sister’s daughters Jo Gammage, Sandy Rhodes, Nancy Aud and Cathy Elfgen who all live the in area. She also has a niece and nephew in Decatur, Illinois, Brenda Wilson and Bobby Taylor and a nephew in Arizona, Alan Taylor. In addition, she has numerous grand and great grand nieces and nephews in Illinois, Missouri and Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Minnie; husband, Byron; and sister, Eilene.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at 10am at Upper Alton Cemetery. Burial will follow.

Glen A Sackett, Sr. 83, passed away at 1:36 a.m., Friday, December 23, 2011.
He was born in Dunlap, IL on February 8, 1928 the oldest son of the late Jonathan and Jane Belle (Powers) Sackett.
On March 18, 1950, he married Violet L. Meisenheimer in Alton, she survives.
Glen enlisted in the Army when he was 17 years old and served in the European Theater in Italy and was discharged in 1949. He worked at Laclede Steel in Alton for 16 years and 6 months and then for the City of Alton at the Parks Department as a Maintenance Supervisor for 24 years and retired in 1990. Glen volunteered for The Salvation Army for more than 40 years. He was also an Assistant Cub Scout Leader and Boy Scout Leader.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind four sons and three daughters, Eugene and Regina Sackett of Alton, Sue and George Bridgeman of WV, Glen Jr and Jene Sackett of IA, Jane L. Auguston of Eaast Alton, Billy Sackett of Alton, Danny and Anna Sackett of IN, and Gracie Lang of TX; a brother Byron and Darlene Sackett, one sister Mary Carr of Alton; a special granddaughter whom he helped raise, Neta Sackett; 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a special granddaughter he helped raise, Jane Belle Johnson; a brother Daniel Sackett; and a sister Josephine Pennock.

Violet Sackett
Violet L. Sackett, 92, passed away at 6:14 am, Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
She was born on September 5, 1930, in Centralia, IL the daughter of Harold J. and Louise B. (Bauer) Meisenheimer. Violet married Glen Sackett on March 18, 1950, in Alton, IL. He preceded her in death December 23, 2011.
In her younger years Violet worked at the Catholic Orphanage, where she developed her love for Cardinals Baseball. She then started volunteering and helping out at Salvation Army. She enjoyed baking, gardening and watching the birds and squirrels. She will be remembered as wonderful mother and amazing caring woman.
She leaves behind four sons and three daughters, Eugene and Regina Sackett of Alton, Sue and George Bridgeman of WV, Glen Jr. and Jene Sackett of IA, Jane L. Augustson of East Alton, Billy Sackett (Maurita Sackett) of Caseyville, IL, Danny and Anna Sackett of IN, and Gracie and Rick Fischback of TX; sisters, Alice Clayton and Marilyn King; sister-in-law, Alvie Meisenheimer and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a special granddaughter, Jane Belle Johnson; two brothers, Harold Meisenheimer and John Michael Meisenheimer; and sister, Laura Bridgeman.
Per her wishes cremation rites were accorded.
A Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral home in Alton, IL.

Richard Roman Sackett, son of Percy Hamilton Sackett and Bessie Walteretta Roman, was born in Bentonville, Benton County, ArkansasG, on 21 October 1909.1 He died aged 55 at the Columbia Hospital, Richland County, South CarolinaG, on 17 January 1964 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, ColumbiaG.3,4 He married in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MinnesotaG, on 14 August 1937, Loretta Marjorie/Elizabeth Gille, daughter of C F Hugh Gille and Katherine E Burdick.2 Loretta was born in St Paul, Ramsey County, MinnesotaG, on 3 September 19125,6 and died aged 81 in Columbia, Richland County, South CarolinaG, on 27 September 1993.7,8,9

Loretta Gille Is Bride.
A gown of while mousseline de soie was worn by Miss Loretta Marjorie Gille of St. Paul, at her marriage on Saturday evening to Mr. Richard Roman Sackett, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Sackett of 3849 Pleasant avenue. The service was read at 8 o'clock at the Sackett home by the Rev. R. J. Berlis, assistant pastor at Westminster Presbyterian church. Ferns, palms and garden flowers formed the setting.
The bride completed her costume by a coronet in her hair and a bouquet of white roses, sweet peas and gladioli.
Mrs. William F. Miller, Jr., of St. Paul, was matron of honor, and Miss Lucille McLeer, also of St. Paul, bridesmaid. Both wore pale pink mousseline de soie and their flowers were pink sweet peas, roses and larkspur. Mr. Sackett was his son's best man.
A reception followed the ceremony. The bridegroom's mother wore yellow organdy with a shoulder bouquet of yellow roses. Mr. Sackett and his bride are going to Douglas Lodge in northern Minnesota on their wedding trip. For travel Mrs. Sackett is wearing a black and white ensemble. After September 1 the couple will be at home at 5035 Chowen avenue.

Richard Sackett Dies at Age 54; Rites Saturday
Richard Roman Sackett, 54, of 1203 Jackson Ave., died early this morning in the Columbia Hospital.
He was born in Bentonville, Ariz., the son of P. A. Sackett and Bessie Roman Sackett.
Mr. Sackett was engaged in public relations.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Loretta Sackett; a daughter, Katherine S. Sackett and a son, David A. Sackett.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the graveside in Elmwood Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph E. Sturtevant will officiate.
Active pallbearers will be Herbert Upchurch, Jack Keefer, Jim Madden, Ellis MacDougall, John Nash and Charles Wickenburg.
Friends may call at Paschal Funeral Home and the residence.

Loretta Sackett
Services for Loretta M Gille Sackett, 81, will be private in Minnesota at a later date. Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, is in charge. Memorials may be made to the National Wildlife Federation.
Mrs Sackett, wife of the late Richard R. Sackett, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1993. Born in Minneapolis, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Katherine Gille. She retired from the Department of Social Services and was a former member of the Pilot's Club.
Surviving are a son, David Sackett of Darlington; a daughter, Katherine McLeod of Columbia; and one grandchild.
