- John Pay appears also to have been known as James. He is recorded as James in the baptism records of his daughters Charlotte (1826), Jane (1830), and Sarah (1834), but appears as John in Elizabeth's baptism record of 1832. He is listed as James in the 1841 census. This chronology would not support the possibility of there having been both a John and a James Pay, although the different occupations of John, a postmaster when he married, and James, a shoemaker in the 1841 census, is puzzling.

Thomas Sackett
Father | William Sackett (1771-1861) |
Mother | Elizabeth Holt (1771-1845) |
Thomas Sackett, farmer and bailiff of St Peter in Thanet, Kent, son of William Sackett and Elizabeth Holt, was born in St Peter in ThanetG on 28 September 18041 and baptized at St Peter in ThanetG on 6 January 1805.1 He died aged 65 in ThanetG on 20 June 18702 and was buried at St Peter in ThanetG on 24 June 1870.4 He married at Birchington Church, KentG, on 13 October 1827, Harriet Brown.3 Harriet was born in Birchington, KentG, about 1802.5,6 She died aged 767 and was buried at St Peter in ThanetG on 22 May 1878.8
In 1841 Thomas was living at Newlands, St Peter's, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Thos Sackett, a bailiff, aged 37 and born in Kent. Living with him was his wife Harriet, aged 39 and also born in Kent. Also in the household were an 18-year-old female servant and five male agricultural workers.9
In 1851 he was living at Newlands, St Peter's, KentG, and was recorded as Thomas Sackett, head of household, married, aged 46 and born in St Peter's. He was a farmer of 40 acres, employing three labourers, and was also the farm bailiff boarding servants for Mr Bedford of Newlands. Living with him were his wife Harriet, 48, and 18-year-old nephew, Thomas Sackett (his brother Francis's son.)10
In 1861 he was living at Callis Court Farm, St Peter's, KentG, and was recorded as Thomas Sackett, a farmer of 81 acres, employing two men and a boy, head of household, married, aged 56, and born in St Peter's. Living with him was his wife Harriet, aged 58, and born in Acol, Kent. Also in the household were a house servant, Jane Pay, the three farm workers, Thomas Sackett, George Culmer, and Henry Sackett, and a visitor, Elizabeth Hunt, with her two young children, Hannah and Charles.11 [Most of these residents were family members. Jane Pay and Elizabeth Hunt were nieces (daughters of Thomas's sister Hannah), while Thomas and Henry Sackett were nephews (sons respectively of brothers Francis and Edward)]
Thomas made his will in St Peter's, KentG, on 31 October 1868, naming as beneficiaries his brothers Francis and Edward, his nephews Thomas Edward Sackett, James Packer, Jonathan Packer, George Packer and Stephen Packer, and his nieces Charlotte Hannah Pay, Jane Elizabeth Pay, Elizabeth Holt Pay and Sarah Vanhear Pay.12 He left the residue of his estate, after specified bequests, to his wife Harriet for her lifetime, after which the estate was to go a quarter to each of his two brothers, a quarter to be shared equally among the children of his deceased sister Hannah, and a quarter to be similarly shared among the children of his deceased sister Jane. As well as the farm, the value of the personal estate was nearly £1,000.
In 1871 Thomas's widow Harriet was living at Callis Grange, St Peter's, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Harriet Sackett, a farmer of 68 acres, head of household, aged 68, and born in Birchington, Kent. Also in the household were a female general servant and three male farm servants.6
After Harriet's death in 1878, Thomas's will was proved a second time, by William Joad, a surviving executor, presumably to enable him to effect the division of the estate as willed by Thomas.
