Hannah Harriet Spain, daughter of Thomas Spain and Harriet Crow Jarman, was born in Margate, Kent^G, in 1838¹ and baptized at St John in Thanet, Kent^G, on 4 March 1838.² She married in Ramsgate, Kent^G, on 24 October 1858, William Bristow Bristow, son of David Bristow and Mary ___.^3,4,5 William was baptized at St John in Thanet^G on 15 November 1835.⁶ He died aged 26 in Thanet^G in 1861.⁷

Emma Crow Spain, daughter of Thomas Spain and Harriet Crow Jarman, was born in Margate, Kent^G, in 1829 and baptized at St John in Thanet^G on 12 April 1829.¹ She died aged 85 in Penshurst, Victoria, Australia^G, on 22 November 1914^2,3 and was buried at Boram Boram Cemetery, Penshurst^G.³ She married in Ramsgate, Kent^G, on 29 January 1849, George Clark, son of James Clark and Catherine Twist.^4,5,6,7 George was born in Ramsgate^G in 1828 and baptized at St Lawrence in Thanet^G on 6 April 1828.⁸ He died aged about 78 in Penshurst^G on 15 April 1907⁹ and was buried at Boram Boram Cemetery^G.⁹

     George and Emma emigrated to Victoria, Australia^G, aboard the ship Shand, arriving at Port Fairy on 21 January 1855. They first settled in Hamilton, Victoria, before moving to Penshurst, Victoria, where George built a house on the corner of Martin and Cobb Streets.¹²

Eliza Frances Spain, daughter of Thomas Spain and Harriet Crow Jarman, was born in St Lawrence in Thanet, Kent^G, in 1846.¹ She died aged 54 in Thanet^G in 1901.² She married in Thanet^G in 1863, John James Clark, son of John Clark and Ann ___.³ John was born in Garlinge, Kent^G, in 1831.^4,5 He was probably the John Clark whose death at age 50 was registered in Canterbury, Kent^G, in the March quarter 1881.⁶

Edward Cleve Goldfinch, mariner, son of Stephen Goldfinch and Harriet Sackett Spain, was born in Margate, Kent^G, in 1873.^1,2 He died aged about 62 in Thanet, Kent^G, in 1935.³ He married in Thanet^G in 1893, Mary Louise Farrett.^4,5 Mary was born in Ramsgate^G on 12 August 1873^1,6 and died aged 98 in Thanet^G in 1972.⁶
     In 1881 Edward was living at 160 King Street, Ramsgate^G, in the household of his grandparents George and Susannah Wetherhead, and was recorded in the census as Edward G Goldfinch, a scholar, aged seven and born in Margate.⁷
     On 5 April 1891, the night of the census, Edward was on board the sailing ship "Cornucopia", moored in the River Wear, Sunderland, County Durham^G. He was listed as Edward Goldfinch, a cook, one of six crewmen, aged 17 and born in Margate. The ship was of 206 tons and was engaged in the coasting trade.⁸
     In 1901 he was living at 3 Castle Road, St Lawrence, Ramsgate^G, and was recorded as Edward Goldfinch, a general labourer, head of household, married, aged 27 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Mary, 28, and their children, Beatrice, 7, Alfred, 5, Violet, 3, and Frederick, aged one.⁹
     In 1911 he was living at 9 Rodney Street, Ramsgate^G, and was recorded as Edward Goldfinch, a mariner, head of household, married, aged 38 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Mary, 38, and their children, Beatrice, 17, Alfred, 16, Violet, 13, Frederick, 11, Hilda, 9, Edward, 6, and Sidney, aged one.¹⁰
