Serious Charges.
Allegations Made Against D. R. Sackett
In A Suit Brought Today
Damages to the Amount of $20,000 Wanted—The Charges in the Case.
Late this afternoon papers in the case of Clara M. Martin vs. D. R. Sackett were filed with County Clerk Holcomb. The complaint asks for $10,000 actual and $10,000 exemplary damages and makes most serious charges against the defendant Sackett. It states first that he came to this city about Dec. 1st, 1893, with the plaintiff, who is now a girl of about 14 years, and that from the said date until Sept. 5 of this year the defendant [sic] was in the sole care and custody of the defendant.
The complaint then alleges that while the child was so under his care the defendant Sackett, "wilfully, wrongfully and unlawfully, with intent to injure, corrupt and debauch her, and against her will and consent, did force and compel the said Clara Martin to occupy the same room and bed with him and to sleep with him, and did during all said times assault with intent to carnally know her and such assaults were made against her by force and against her will," wherefore damages as stated are prayed for.
Sacket is a member of the commission firm of Sacket & Patterson and is reported to be well fixed financially. He has gone to Riverside. Haines & Ward and W. H. C. Ecker represent the girl, and Eugene Daney the defendant.
Mrs. Hattie Kelly, a daughter of W. A. Dorris, was on Sept. 5th appointed guardian of the child and the latter is now in her custody.
Sackett always introduced the child as his daughter.

Clara Martin's Charges.
Testimony Which Indicates They Are Not Sustained.
The damage suit of Clara J. Martin vs. D. R. Sackett is still on trial in Judge Hughes' court. The principal witnesses today were P. C. Remondino, who stated that he made a medical examination of the plaintiff at the instigation of the district attorney, some months ago, at the time the attempt was made to institute criminal proceedings against Sackett for attempted rape, but that her complaint was not verified.
Mrs. Miller testified that the girl had always claimed that she slept with Sackett of her own volition and because she was afraid to sleep alone.
W. C. Patterson testified that Sackett to his knowledge had always treated the girl kindly and with consideration. The defendant himself has been on the stand during the balance of the day. The case will be closed tomorrow.

Heavy Damages Returned.
The jury in the $100,000 damage case of Clara Martin vs. D. R. Sackett, for alleged immoral treatment, rendered a verdict at 3:30 yesterday afternoon for plaintiff, awarding $7000 as damages. The defendant Sackett is about 60 years old, and has been one of the prominent business men in the city for a number of years. The details of the case and the story of the child plaintiff are wholly unfit for publication. Sackett's attorneys say they will appeal the case to the Supreme Court.

Sackett Case Reversed.
D. R. Sackett, the wealthy Chicagoan living in this city, who was mulcted in the sum of $7000 damages for alleged improper relations with Clara Martin, a fourteen-year-old girl adopted by him, has secured a reversal of the verdict from Judge Hughes. The court holds that the evidence did not justify such a verdict, and orders a new trial.
The Martin girl was adopted by Sackett in Chicago some years ago, and her father alleged that Sackett represented himself to be married, whereas he was a widower. The girl was brought west by Sackett, but after a time she ran away, alleging inhuman treatment. Mrs. A. Kelly secured legal guardianship of the girl, and it was at her instance that the damage suit was brought against Sackett. Sackett claims that the affair is an ordinary attempt at blackmail.

Attorney E. D. Sackett, of this city left Saturday night for San Diego, Cal., being called there by the dangerous illness of his father, D. R. Sackett. The latter was a former resident of New London, where he was Justice of the Peace for a number of years, and was mayor at one time.

Jeremiah "Jerry" Atwater, son of Joel Atwater and Lydia Sacket, was born in Russell, Hampden County, MassachusettsG, on 25 August 1805.1,2 He died aged 37 in Westfield, Hampden CountyG, on 19 March 1843 and was buried at the Old Burying Ground, WestfieldG.1 Jeremiah married in WestfieldG on 25 May 1836, Nancy Sacket, his 4th cousin, daughter of Moses Sacket and Tryphena Hiscock.3
Jeremiah died intestate. During administration of his estate it soon became apparent that it was insolvent and proceedings later became controversial.
At the Hampden County Probate Court on 8 April 1843 his widow Nancy declined appointment as administrator. Lewis Fowler was appointed on 10 April. The estate had debts of some $2,400, owing to more than fifty claimants in amounts of a few dollars to more than $300. Claimants included Mariah Sacket $4.38, Moses Sacket Jr $29.20, Anna Sacket $6.87, Noah Sacket $253.98, and Laura Sacket $92.67. The estate, both real and personal, was ordered to be sold at auction and this realised some $700, after Nancy's selection of items to a value of $150 as permitted by the Court.
On 12 March 1844 Lewis Fowler reported to the Court that he "suspects Martin Sacket [one of Nancy's brothers] of said Westfield of having concealed embezzled or conveyed away the money goods or effects of said decd." Martin was subjected to detailed questioning by the Judge of Probate and denied any wrongdoing.4
