Sackett—Judge Robert A.
The Hon. Robert A. Sackett passed peacefully on January 10, 2023 at age 83. He was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico to Helen and Frederick Sackett, professors at the University of Puerto Rico where His Honor received both undergrad and law degree. He passed the Puerto Rico and New York State Law Bar in 1964. With his bilingual/bicultural background he was awarded an Appellate Division, First Department Fellowship to open and head the new Legal Aid Society Office in the Bronx. In 1992 Mayor David Dinkins appointed Robert Sackett to the Criminal Court of New York City. In 2003 Judge Sackett was duly elected to the New York State Supreme Court where he remained until his retirement in 2016. He was always guided by a strong inherited belief and love of the Constitution (grandfather Harvard 1898, law 1900) where he balanced compassion with strength fighting for the "underdog." He was especially proud to have served as Deputy General Counsel for the New York State Special Commission on Attica. His delight in his family, friends and co-workers touched us all deeply. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Mercedes; his son Roberto; loving step-sons Robert and Vincent; precious grandchildren Costanza, Federico, Diego who live in Italy. Stateside loving grandchildren; Danna, Robert, Selena, Victoria, Anthony, Vincent and three great-grandchildren, Ryder, Kayden and Harper. A private memorial was held in Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
