William Greenwood/Sackett, son of William Sackett and Mary Ann Greenwood, was born in 9 Devonshire? Street, Brighton, SussexG, on 5 November 18591,2 and baptized at St John's, BrightonG, on 18 August 1861.3 He was possibly the William Sackett who died aged 73 in Bromley, KentG, in 1934.5 He married at St Saviour's, Battersea, SurreyG, on 16 November 1879, Sarah Savage, daughter of Charles Savage.4 Sarah was born in Westminster, LondonG, about 1856.6
William was born before the marriage of his mother Mary Greenwood to his supposed father William Sackett. He appears in records in both names, and his son Charles was recorded as both Greenwood and Sackett in the register when he married in 1908. A present-day descendant recalls that the Greenwoods often referred to themselves as Sacketts in conversation.
In 1861 William was living at 14 Cavendish Street, BrightonG, and was recorded in the census as William Greenwood, aged one and born in Brighton. He was living with his mother Mary in the household of his grandparents Henry and Sarah Greenwood.7
In 1871 he was living at 24 Artillery Row, Westminster, LondonG, in the household of his parents William and Mary, and was recorded as William Sackett, aged 11 and born in Brighton.8
In 1881 he was living at 15 Sea Grave Road, Fulham, LondonG, and was recorded as William Sacket, a hostler, head of household, married, aged 22. Living with him were his wife Sarah, 21, and their daughter Sarah R, aged one. There were also five lodgers in the household.9
