Robert N. Sackett is the worthy representative of an old pioneer family of this country and is a resident of Pleasant Grove township. He was born in Wisconsin in 1859, his parents being N.B. and Agnes Sackett, the father being a native of New York, where his birth occurred in 1818. N.B. Sackett spent his boyhood on his father's farm, attending the district schools and assisting at all classes of farm work. His education was somewhat meager, but served his purposes in after life, as his best school was experience. In 1837 he married Olive E. Henry, and to this union the following children were born: Anna E., Martin M., Henry P. and Sarah L. His first wife dying November 29, 1845, he chose for his second wife Miss Agnes Young, to whom he was married March 2, 1846. This marriage was blessed with the following children: Solomon, Cyrus, James, William, Ellen and Robert N., the subject of this review. The family came West and for a time lived in Wisconsin, but finally came to Olmsted county in 1861 and bought 160 acres on sections 32 and 33, Pleasant Grove township, and here they lived and labored until the deaths of both parents, N.B. passing away August 13, 1886, and his wife February 6, 1882. They were most exemplary people, and their lives were spent in industry, sociability and honor. The father was one of the most prominent citizens and occupied various positions with fidelity and credit. Their son, Robert N., the subject of this sketch, was reared to manhood on the old homestead in this county and received a common-school education. He learned the art of agriculture by hard work in his early years and this has since been his occupation. He remained on the place until the death of his mother in 1882 and in the meantime had accumulated some means of his own with which to face the struggle of life. He finally married Annetta Hopkins, whose parents, C.M. and S.L. Hopkins, were prominent pioneer settlers of Olmsted county, coming here at an early day from Canada and Ohio. They are yet living in Rochester, enjoying that rest and quiet so relished by elderly people. Robert N. and wife are parents of the following children: Robert A., Homer D., N.B., Clara A., Nellie M., Effie L., Lester E., Leslie C. and Mary A. After their marriage, Robert N. and wife continued in charge of the old homestead until 1886, when they bought 160 acres, being the old homestead in section 32, Pleasant Grove township, where they have ever since resided. They now have a well improved farm, equipped with substantial buildings and surrounded by a beautiful grove. It is one of the pleasant homes of the county, because the surroundings are beautiful and comfortable and the house is filled with refined and educated people. In addition to the above mentioned farm, they own a tract of fifteen acres of timberland, and stock in the Farmer's Elevator. Mr. Sackett is a member of the Methodist church, as also is his wife. He is a trustee and she is active in Sunday-school work. He is a member of the A.O.U.W., and is identified with the Prohibition party. He is broad-gauged, public-spirited, and takes pride in giving his children good educations and in seeing them get properly started in life.

William Webster Sackett
| Father | William Walker Sackett (1813-1893) |
| Mother | Polly Ann Nash (1813-1900) |
William Webster Sackett, son of William Walker Sackett and Polly Ann Nash, was born in Harmony, Chautauqua County, New York StateG, on 13 January 1836.1,2 He died aged 77 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MinnesotaG, on 24 August 1913 and was buried at Lanesboro Cemetery, Lanesboro, Fillmore County, MinnesotaG.4,5 He married in MinnesotaG on 2 February 1864, Catherine Louise Splaine, daughter of Robert Splaine and Ann Read.3 Catherine was born in EnglandG on 17 March 1845.4 She died aged 77 in Hennepin County, MinnesotaG, on 9 March 1923 and was buried at Lanesboro CemeteryG.4
In 1850 William was living in Harmony, Chautauqua County, New York StateG, in the household of his parents William and Polly, and was recorded in the census as William Sackett, aged 14 and born in New York.6
In 1855 he was living in HarmonyG in the household of his parents William and Polly, and was recorded as Wm W Sackett, a blacksmith, aged 19 and born in Chautauqua County.7
William was the first teacher at the school established in Fillmore Village, Fillmore County, MinnesotaG, in 1857. The school had seven or eight pupils and was housed in a log hut.8
According to an 1860 census record, William was then living in HarmonyG in the household of his parents William and Polly and was listed as William W Sacket, a blacksmith, aged 24.9 This record would appear to contradict the historical record that he was teaching school in Fillmore, Minnesota, in 1857. However, a further census record taken in Chatfield, Fillmore CountyG, in 1860 surely also refers to this William Sackett and may explain the apparent discrepancy. In this record, William is listed as a blacksmith, aged 24, and born in New York. A Mary A Sackett, 22, is living with him. The 1860 census does not record relationships but, rather than assuming that this would have been his wife, it would be consistent with other records to conclude that this was his sister. William's occupation as a blacksmith would seem at odds with starting a school but his sister Mary was a teacher (1855 census). Regarding William's census listing in two remote places, it is noted that it was not entirely unusual for adult children to be enumerated in a family home even when they had removed elsewhere.10
William served the Union during the American Civil War. Catherine's obituary
He enlisted, aged 25, as a Private in Captain J W Bishop's Company "A", Second Regiment of Minnesota Volunteers in Chatfield, Fillmore CountyG, on 26 June 1861 and was discharged after eleven months' service on 6 June 1862.11,12 In June 1863, aged 27, he re-registered for the Civil War draft in ChatfieldG.13,14 He re-enlisted, was wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, on 20 September 1863 and was mustered out due to disability on 6 June 1864.15

Catherine's obituary
Pioneer Lady Laid To Rest.
Mrs. W.W. Sackett, Early Settler of Lanesboro, Dies in Minneapolis.
"Mother" Sackett is dead.
Saturday last Lanesboro stood with uncovered head, figuratively speaking, while from the afternoon train was unloaded the casket containing the earthly remains of one who was one of the town's earliest settlers and one of its best beloved women. And as the funeral procession slowly wended its way to God's acre on the southern border of the town, the heartfelt sympathy of the community accompanied the bereaved children and grandchildren on their mournful trip, the last journey on the earth together with mother. She now rests side-by-side with her life's partner, W.W. Sackett, who passed away in 1913. The late Mrs. W.W. Sackett would have been 78 years next Saturday, as she was born March 17th, 1845, at Manchester, England. Her girl name was Kathryn Louise Splaine, and as the babe she came with her parents to the USA. Her first home was at River Falls, Massachusetts, USA, but Minnesota still was a territory her parents came here and located in the Chatfield territory. Here she grew to womanhood. While she was still a school girl the man who was to become her husband came into her life - Mr. Sackett coming to the Chatfield neighborhood to teach school. The Civil war broke out and the young school teacher enlisted, but when he left for the fields of battle he carried with him the promise of his young girl pupil that she would wait for him. The long years of the war at last passed, and young veteran and "the girl he had left behind" married. A couple of years afterwards a new town to be started on the banks of the Root River became a mecca for many, among them Mr. Sackett and his bride, and he located in Lanesboro as a grain buyer. And thus this village became the home town of the Sackett family. Here these two pioneers lived until about fourteen years ago, when they removed to Minneapolis to spend their remaining years with their children who had flown from the old nest. To know the late Mrs. Sackett was to love her. Her life wasn't always full of sunshine, but she always retained her cheerful outlook on life and a kind disposition. As a friend she was true blue, and as a neighbor no one could surpass her. Her children idolized her. Since last fall she has been in failing health and has been tenderly cared for at the Minneapolis home of her daughter, Mrs. G.H. St. Clair. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia, and the end came Friday morning, March 9th. She is survived by two sons, R.C. Sackett of Minneapolis, J. Clifton Sackett a resident of Alaska, and by three daughters, Mrs. G.H. St. Clair, Mrs. Kathleen E. McDougall, and Miss. Maude Sackett of Minneapolis, also by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. All the children, with the exception of the son in Alaska, three of her Minneapolis grandchildren, and one grandson, R.C. Hawley of Racine, Wisconsin, attended the funeral here on Saturday.

It is claimed that the first school in the town was called to order by William Sackett. The school was held at Fillmore Village in a little log hut in 1857, and had an attendance of seven or eight scholars. The teacher, Mr. Sackett, had just arrived from New York; he afterward married Catherine Splain, and moved to Lanesboro. District 94. This district comprises what is known as the Fillmore village district. Its organization was effected in 1856, being without doubt the first organized district in the town, and the first place in which school was held. A log house was put together in 1856, by subscription, which lasted until 1873, when a new house was put up in the village at a cost of $900. The first school was taught by William Sackett, and was attended by seven or eight scholars."
