Sackett DNA Project test results

Matched DNA results of Sackett descendants who have participated so far in the Sackett DNA Project are found to fall into two distinct groups, described here as the Thanet line and the New Haven line.

The Thanet line

The Thanet line, headed by Thomas Sackett the elder of Thanet, Kent, England, is the predominant ancestral line of the American Sacketts, through Simon Sackett the colonist. It is also the line of all known present-day English descendants with the Sackett name.

Of the participants with matching DNA in this group, a significant number have well-documented paper trails back to Thomas Sackett the elder of Thanet, providing a benchmark for this group.

Several Sacketts whose ancestral trails have otherwise hit brick walls are also found to belong to this group. These are Skene Douglas Sackett of New Milford, Connecticut (1765–1852), Aaron Sackett of Litchfield, Connecticut (1767–after 1820), Capt Richard Sackett of New York & Dutchess County (c1678–1746), Warren J Sackett (c1794–1851), Thomas Sackett of Hopewell, New Jersey (say 1720–), and Nathaniel Sackett (say 1770–1817). The matched DNA of known descendants of these Sacketts strongly supports a conclusion that all were descended from Simon the colonist.

The ancestries of DNA participants in this line are shown on the Thanet line DNA/genealogical overlay charts.

The New Haven line

The New Haven line, headed by John Sackett of New Haven, is the second ancestral line of the American Sacketts. Its English roots have not been identified.

A number of participants with closely matching DNA have been placed in the New Haven group. Two have well-documented ancestries back to John Sackett of New Haven, providing a benchmark for the group. Several participants have genealogical paper trails back to Joseph Sackett of Vermont (bef 1755–bef 1830). On the strength of the DNA matches, Joseph Sackett of Vermont has now been placed in the New Haven tree as a great-grandson of John of New Haven. James Sackett of Milford, Connecticut (1804–1884) whose parents have not been identified, is also found to belong to this group, and is thus most likely to have been a descendant of John of New Haven.

The ancestries of participants in this line are shown on the New Haven line DNA/genealogical overlay charts
