Wrong-way driver killed in U.S. 74 accident
Motorists tried all kinds of steps to alert a Matthews woman that she was driving the wrong way down busy U.S. 74 between Matthews and Stallings.
"They were blowing their horns and flashing their lights," Trooper W.A. Woolbright of the N.C. Highway Patrol said, "but they didn't get her attention."
The woman crashed head-on into an empty oil tanker. The drivers of two other cars escaped injury as the tanker jackknifed into the median, brushing one of the cars and forcing the driver of the second to swerve down an embankment.
The woman, identified as Patricia Rose Sackette, 22, of 4009 Stallingwood Rd., Matthews, died about 3 a.m. Sunday at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. No one else was injured.
Mr. Woolbright said witnesses spotted Miss Sackette driving east in the westbound lane of U.S. 74 about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Truck driver Timothy Webb of Route 1, Rockingham, told troopers he was heading west on U.S. 74 when the car in front of him suddenly pulled into the left lane, and he saw the Sackette car bearing down on him.
The truck and car, both going about 55 mph, collided head-on, Mr Woolbright said, sending the truck into the median and throwing the car backward onto the shoulder.
The truck brushed a car driven by Samuel Allen of 1704 Icemorelee St., Monroe. Tony Blackman of 1733 Wilmore Dr., Charlotte, drove his car down an embankment to avoid the wreck.
Miss Sackette was an employee of Harris-Teeter Super Markets Inc. at the Quail Hollow Road store. She was a Gaston County native and a member of Stallings United Methodist Church.
Survivors are father, Robert Sackette of Massachusetts; stepfather and mother, Richard and Marlene Ashman of Matthews; brother, Michael Sackette of Fort Bragg; sister, Miss Laura Sackette of Matthews; stepbrothers, Richard Ashman Jr., Michael Ashman, James Ashman, all of Matthews; grandmother, Mrs. Grace Walker of Waterbury, Conn.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stallings United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery East. McEwen Funeral Home, Mint Hill chapel, is in charge.
Memorials can be made to Stallings United Methodist Church, Stallings Road, Matthews, N.C. 28105. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at McEwen Mint Hill chapel.

Janice Sackett Williams
Much beloved Sister, Aunt, Teacher, Coach, Mentor, and Friend, Janice Sackett Williams, born in Riga, New York, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2015, at the age of 89.
Janice graduated from Lock Haven University, Lock Haven, PA, and went on to teach physical education and coach women's field hockey for over 45 years, the predominance of which were spent at Akron Central School, Akron, NY. She still holds a record as one of the most "winning" coaches in women's high school field hockey in the state of New York. More importantly, she was ahead of her time in teaching young women that they were not second class citizens to young men, and impressing upon her corner of the world that she expected her female students and athletes to be treated equally with the male students and athletes. After her retirement, she spent time with her friends and family, travelled the world, and enjoyed her life to the fullest. She will be greatly missed, was one of a kind, a force to be reckoned with, and loved dearly.

A Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2015, at the Akron Masonic Lodge, 63 John Street, Akron, N.Y., from 3-6pm, with a Tribute to Janice beginning at 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the U.S. Field Hockey Association, Lock Haven University, The Heifer Project, The Community School of South Tamworth, N.H., your local Humane Society or the charity of your choice would be appropriate. Baptism22 July 1745, St Peter in Thanet, KentG,1
Marriage4 July 1767, Cockenzie, East LothianGJean Flookard2
Richard Mockett, son of Sampson Mockett and Mary Wilson, was baptized at St Peter in Thanet, KentG, on 22 July 1745.1 Richard Mockett and Jean Flookard had an illegitimate daughter, Janet, born in Cockenzie, East Lothian, ScotlandG, on 4 July 1767 and baptized a few days later in Edinburgh.2 Jean was probably Jean Fleuker, the daughter of Alexander Fleuker and Bessie Hacket, born in East Lothian, ScotlandG, on 4 November 1744 and baptized at Tranent, East LothianG, on 11 November 1744.3 Jean subsequently married in TranentG on 15 September 1770, William Stewart.4
Jean was compeared (summoned) to the Tranent Kirk Session on 24 January 1768 regarding her illegitimate daughter, in the following terms: "Jean Fluckhard, an unmarried young woman, brought forth a child on 4th July 1767, in her father's house. That Richard Mocket a sailor, was the father, and that the child was begot in Leith during her stay there, and that she acquainted him of being with child to him. That he was abroad at present, and that she had not heard from him since he went away, and had no letters to produce acknowledging himself to be the father. Declared further that the child was baptised at Edinburgh by Mr Lee, an Episcopalian minister, and that her sister and sister-in-law were witnesses. She was reproved for her fornication, and was desired to get a letter from Richard Mocket acknowledging himself to be the father of the child, and told that she behoved to lie under scandal till that should be done, and apply to the Session to have her scandal removed."5
Richard's elder brother Sampson was a shipmaster. It would appear that the brothers sailed from Thanet to Scotland in 1765 or early 1766. Sampson married there in 1766 and had children there in 1767 and 1768. Jean's testimony suggests that Richard had abandoned her and left the area. He does not appear to have returned to Thanet. Further records for Sampson and Richard have not been found.
