Joseph C Ashley, son of Noah Pease Ashley and Clarissa Bagg Sackett, was born in Massachusetts^G about 1843.¹
     In 1850 Joseph was living in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts^G, in the household of his parents Noah and Clarissa, and was recorded in the census as Joseph Ashley, aged six and born in Massachusetts.²
     In 1860 he was living in Springfield^G in the household of his parents Noah and Clarissa, and was recorded as Joseph Ashley, aged 16.³
     In 1870 he was living in Springfield^G in the household of his mother Clarissa, and was recorded as Joseph Ashley, a railroad fireman, aged 26.⁴
     Joseph shared, with his brothers, Justin and Gilbert, in the inheritance of their father's estate. Their father Noah had died intestate. Joseph's brother Justin was appointed, with their mother, as an administrator of the estate by the Hampden County Probate Court on 12 July 1870. With the assistance of commissioners appointed by the Court, agreement was reached for the division of the estate among Noah's three sons, allowing for their mother's right of dower in the form of a house and land at Carew Street, Springfield. The arrangement was ratified by the Court on 7 July 1874.⁵

Ichabod Blakeslee, son of Manning Blakeslee and Olive Sacket, was born in Massachusetts^G about 1830.¹ He married first in Westfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts^G, on 4 November 1851, Olive Holmes, daughter of William Holmes.² Olive was born in Russell, Hampden County^G, about 1825.³ She died aged 33 in Russell^G on 30 May 1859.⁴ He married second on 23 November 1859, Maria A Holmes.²
     In 1850 Ichabod was living in Russell, Hampden County^G, in the household of his mother Olive, and was recorded in the census as Jehabod Blakesley, a laborer, aged 20 and born in Massachusetts.⁵
     In 1860 he was living in Russell^G and was recorded as Ichabod Blakeslee, a farmer, aged 31. Living with him were his second wife, Maria, 19, his children by his first marriage, Alice, 6, and Elbert, 4, his mother Olive, 63, and his brother Henry, 41.⁶
