Salinda's obituary
Reed.—Mrs. Salinda Reed, mother of the Rev, J. N. Sackett, of the Central New York Conference, died at the home of her son in Ovid, N.Y., Oct. 10, 1897. She was born Jan. 8, 1818, six miles east of Canandaigua, N.Y., where her father, Stephen Thatcher, settled in 1795. In 1833, under the labors of the Revs. Zina J. Buck and Gideon Osborn, she, with her father and brother, was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, being baptized by the Rev. Thomas Burch. Jan. 2, 1845, she was married to Caleb Sackett, who died April 30, 1853. She was married a second time, Aug. 25, 1858, to John A. Reed, and by his death again became a widow Aug. 25, 1877, after which time her home was with her son. The sickness, resulting in her death, originated in a stroke of apoplexy received July 26, 1891. From that time to her death she was a great sufferer and had daily opportunity for testing the grace of God as a support for the soul in need. She trusted, and it sustained her to the end. Her condition was such that six years ago her son retired from the active ministry that he might give undivided attention to her needs. In the days of the slavery agitation she was a decided opponent of that institution and did what she could to create public sentiment against it. From the time of her conversion she was in ardent sympathy with whatever tended to promote the glory of God, and at length gladly gave her son to the work of the ministry. In health she did what she could to advance the Savior's kingdom, and in sickness the cause of Christ always had her prayers and best wishes.
