Augustus Joseph Sackett, probably the son of Maria Schaub (see below), was born in Ohio^G about 1861.¹ He married about 1902, Mary Josephine McAlister.¹ Mary was born in Delaware^G about 1869.¹
     Augustus Sackett's parentage is unclear. He was probably the son of Maria Schaub (born in New Jersey in about 1837) who married in Montgomery County, Ohio, in 1870 John Wager (born in Wittenberg, Germany, in about 1826.)²
     In 1880, Maria, listed as Mary Wager, and Augustus, listed as Agust Wager, were living in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio^G, in the household of Jno Wager, 53, a brewer. Agust was an apprentice, aged 18 and born in Ohio. He was recorded as "son" along with seven other children who would have been John Wager's children by his first wife who had died in 1868.³
     Augustus's assumed mother Mary was listed in her husband John Wager's census record in 1870 with John's ten children. Augustus's name does not appear but, at the end of the list is Charles Shoup, a schoolboy, aged eight and born in Ohio. "Shoup" appears elsewhere in the records as an anglicized variant of Schaub. Identifying Charles with Augustus, although tenuous, is possible. The age is right, and Augustus is not found elsewhere in 1870, nor is Charles Shoup of this age found in other records.⁴
     Augustus Sackett, probably born Schaub and brought up in the Wager household, was using the name Sackett by 1881 when he was listed as Gus J Sacket, a millwright, in the Dayton, Ohio, city directory. He was listed there until 1892, as Gus J, August J, or Augustus J Sackett. He was in Wilmington, Delaware, by 1894, listed as a millwright, and, in 1895 and 1896, as a machinist.
     Augustus's reason for the adoption of the Sackett name is, at this distance, a matter of conjecture. The name Cyrus Sackett as a possible father has been handed down as family lore. If so, a candidate would be Cyrus Sackett (1837–1911), son of Alexander and Isabell (Preston) Sackett. Augustus's mother may have told him that Cyrus was his father, or he may have been an imaginary construct on Augustus's part. An online tree compiled by a descendant of Augustus's refers to the supposed Cyrus as Augustus's "fantasy father", with the embellishment that he was a war hero who died in the Civil War. Cyrus is, however, a plausible candidate: in 1860, he was living in Sugar Creek, just 12 miles from Mary's home in Dayton.^5,6
     Augustus established a manufacturing business in Baltimore^G in 1897. The business, A J Sackett and Sons Company, is now a world leader in precision blending and coating technology in the fertilizer industry. (See Facebook: A J Sackett and Sons Company.)
     In 1910 Augustus was living at East Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Maryland^G, and was recorded in the census as August J Sackett, a machine manufacturer having his own factory, head of household, aged 40 and born in Ohio. He owned his home free of mortgage. Living with him were his wife Mary, 33, and their children, Joseph, 5, and Walter, aged three.⁷
     In 1920 he was living at Hamilton Terrace, Baltimore^G, and was recorded as Augustus Sackett, a machine maker, head of household, aged 58. He rented his home. Living with him were his wife Mary, 50, and their children, Joseph, 14, and Walter, aged 12.⁸

Walter Sackett, son of Augustus Joseph Sackett Sr and Mary Josephine McAlister, was born in Maryland^G on 7 April 1907.^1,2 He died aged 79 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland^G, in September 1986.³
     In 1910 Walter was living at East Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Maryland^G, in the household of his parents Augustus and Mary, and was recorded in the census as Walter Sackett, aged three and born in Maryland.⁴
     In 1920 he was living at Hamilton Terrace, Baltimore^G, in the household of his parents Augustus and Mary, and was recorded as Walter Sackett, aged 12.⁵

Bissel Gleason, daughter of Jacob Gleason and Ruth Sacket, was born on 15 June 1761.¹ She died aged 81 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 19 July 1842 and was buried at Old Benson Cemetery^G.¹ She married on 17 June 1784, Asahel Stiles, son of Zebediah Stiles and Experience Wells.¹ Asahel was born in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts^G, on 29 November 1759.¹ He died aged 94 in Benson^G on 13 April 1854 and was buried at Old Benson Cemetery^G.¹

Benoni Gleason, son of Jacob Gleason and Ruth Sacket, was born in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts^G, about 1760.^1,2 He died aged 59 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 29 August 1819 and was buried at Old Benson Cemetery^G.^4,3 He married in Pittsfield^G Lucy Hubbard, daughter of Captain James Hubbard and Martha Livermore.³ Lucy was born in Pittsfield^G on 3 November 1766.³ She died aged 63 in Benson^G on 6 February 1830 and was buried at Old Benson Cemetery^G.³
     Benoni served in the American Revolutionary War in Captain William Ford's company of Pittsfield. He was present at the surrender of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781.¹

Jacob Gleason, son of Jacob Gleason and Ruth Sacket, was born in 1767¹ and died aged about 73 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 9 May 1840.¹

Sacket Gleason, son of Jacob Gleason and Ruth Sacket, was born in 1785¹ and died aged about 19 in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 8 October 1804.¹

James Gleason, son of Benoni Gleason and Lucy Hubbard, was born say 1787¹ and died in infancy in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 6 April 1789.¹

Sally Gleason, daughter of Benoni Gleason and Lucy Hubbard, was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 29 January 1788¹ and died there aged 82 on 31 October 1870.¹

Lucy Gleason, daughter of Benoni Gleason and Lucy Hubbard, was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 25 April 1790¹ and died there in infancy on 6 May 1790.¹

Betsey Gleason, daughter of Benoni Gleason and Lucy Hubbard, was born in 1792¹ and died aged about 85 in 1877.¹

Henry Gleason, son of Benoni Gleason and Lucy Hubbard, was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, in 1793¹ and died there aged about 21 on 7 April 1815.¹

Martha Gleason, daughter of Benoni Gleason and Lucy Hubbard, was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, in December 1794¹ and died there in infancy on 18 August 1795.¹

Mehitable Gleason, daughter of Benoni Gleason and Lucy Hubbard, was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 23 March 1797.¹ She died aged about 86 in Howell, Livingston County, Michigan^G, in 1883.¹ She married in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 17 March 1824, Joel Barlow Rumsey.¹

James Hubbard Gleason, son of Benoni Gleason and Lucy Hubbard, was born in Benson, Rutland County, Vermont^G, on 27 April 1799¹ and died there aged 84 on 24 August 1883.¹

Mariette C Rumsey, daughter of Joel Barlow Rumsey and Mehitable Gleason, was born on 27 February 1825¹ and died aged 88 on 30 November 1913.¹ She married Lewis C Crittenden.¹

Ira Jennings Rumsey, son of Joel Barlow Rumsey and Mehitable Gleason, was born in Osceola County, Michigan^G, on 20 July 1836¹ and died there in childhood on 15 August 1842.¹

Lillian M Crittenden, daughter of Lewis C Crittenden and Mariette C Rumsey, was born say 1850¹ and died in childhood on 17 March 1855.¹

Charlotte Alta Crittenden, daughter of Lewis C Crittenden and Mariette C Rumsey, was born in 1852¹ and died aged about 72 in 1924.¹ She married Ephraim Wilson Hardy.

Frances C Crittenden, daughter of Lewis C Crittenden and Mariette C Rumsey, was born in 1857¹ and died aged about 61 in 1918.¹
