Chas. McPhail Suicide at Farm Home Friday
Sat Down Under Tree and Shot Self Through Heart with Pistol; Burial Set for Friday
Charles McPhail, 66, farmer living three miles south of Ingalls, committed suicide near his home early Friday morning, May 29, 1931, by shooting himself through the heart with a .45 caliber U.S. government automatic pistol.
The suicide's body, propped against a tree about 200 yards from his farm house, was found by Mrs. McPhail, who heard the shot.
Poor health and despondency are thought to be responsible for his suicide, believes Sheriff M. J. Bradley, who with County Attorney Ernest Jenkins, investigated the case early Friday.
The theory that financial matters may have caused the death was discounted by Sheriff Bradley who said McPhail was a prosperous farmer with considerable acreage in cultivation.
The decedent is said to have returned home from Ingalls late Thursday in a dejected condition and to have got his gun. Mrs. McPhail removed the cartridges but some time during the night or early morning they were discovered by the decedent. He was seen to leave the home between 5 and 6 o'clock Friday morning and sat down under the tree where he shot himself.
Charles McPhail was born near Walshville, Ill., October 18, 1865. He was married to Geneva Stallings July 31, 1906. He came to Oklahoma in 1905 and settled on the farm where he lived until his death.
The decedent is survived by his widow, two brothers, Tead McPhail, Walshville, Ill., and Hall McPhail, Litchfield, Ill; two half-sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Barlow, Walshville, Ill; and Mrs. Mattie Hudspeth, Walshville, Ill; a half-brother, Lon McPhail, Litchfield, Ill.
Funeral services were conducted at the Strode Funeral home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
—Stillwater Gazette, Stillwater, Oklahoma, 5 Jun 1931, p 1
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church in this city Sunday afternoon for William Pierce Stollings, aged pioneer of Ochiltree county. The deceased was born at Clinton, Missouri on January 10, 1862, and died at his home in the Huntoon neighborhood northeast of Perryton on December 14. He was almost 74 years of age at the time of his death. Interment was in the Ochiltree cemetery.
Rev. J. M. Sibley was the officiating minister. Active pallbearers were M. H. Crum, K. C. Trosper, Ollie Morris, T. R. Shirley, Dave Hummer and Luther Wade. Honorary pallbearers were Geo. Latham, Geo. Barnett, J. D. Wade, C. E. Woods, J. H. Woodward and J. H. Shearer.
W. P. Stollings filed on land in Ochiltree county in 1901. On January 29, 1902 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Stollings at Liberty, Missouri. When just a young man, he made a profession in Christ and united with the Christian Church.
Surviving relatives are the widow, a daughter, Mrs. Jerry Thrasher, Douglas, Oklahoma; and one son, Walter Stollings of Perryton.
The deceased during the many years that he has been a resident of this county, had made a host of friends. He was a good citizen, a real neighbor, a loving father, and a faithful husband. He was the owner of a large tract of land and had been very successful in his life’s work as a farmer and stockman.

Joe C. Smith 1881-1959
Joseph Claud Smith, son of Job H. and Mary Elizabeth Smith was born March 31, 1881 in Wain County Iowa and departed this life on May 21, 1959 at Mooreland Community Hospital. He was 78 years, 1 month and 20 days of age.
When sixteen years of age, he came to the new territory of Oklahoma and on June 29, 1902 he was married to Hattie Sackett of Ingallis, Oklahoma. Six children were born to this union, all of whom survive.
The year following their marriage, Joe and Hattie Smith moved to Ellis County and homesteaded land near Harmon. This was to be his home the remainder of his life, a period of 56 years. Much of his life spent under pioneering conditions. He labored to provide well for his family and unselfishly shared whatever he had with those in need. He was richly rewarded by having a host of friends, a home which he loved, and a community in which he was content to live and spend the declining years of his life.
In 1917 Joe Smith consecrated his life to God, was baptized and thereafter attended the church of his choice. He was for many years a Mason, a member of St. Albans Masonic Lodge No. 192 of Arnett.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. Surviving are his wife, Hattie of the home; four daughters two sons; Mrs. Fay New, of Odessa, Texas, Mrs. Geneve Burnham of Derby, Kansas, Mrs. Oneta Franklin of San Jose, California, Mrs Estella Huen of Harmon, Claud Smith of Farmington, New Mexico and Harry Smith of Arnett. Twenty-two grandchildren, and thirty one great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Vinnie Casebier of Delta, Colo., and Mrs. Millie Cloyd of Garfield, Arkansas, other relatives and friends.
Life is but a working day
Whose tasks are set aright
A time to work, a time to pray
And then the quiet night.
And then, please God, a quiet night
Where palms are green, and robes are white,
A long drawn breath, a balm for sorrow
And all things lovely on the morrow.
Whose tasks are set aright
A time to work, a time to pray
And then the quiet night.
And then, please God, a quiet night
Where palms are green, and robes are white,
A long drawn breath, a balm for sorrow
And all things lovely on the morrow.
Services were conducted in the Harmon Nazarene Church Sun. May 24, 2:30 p. m. with the Reverend Marcas Adair officiating. Interment was in the Harmon Cemetery with the Shaw Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
