Obituary
F.B. Sackett
Died at his home, at Heath, yesterday. The deceased was one of the oldest residents of this section, and had spent many years in bringing into bearing a fine grove. He was a progressive settler, and made a success of numerous agricultural experiments, and his production of honey was greater than that of any other citizen in the county. Mr. Sackett was a Pennsylvanian by birth. His disease was of a complicated character, involving the heart and kidneys. His body will be interred at LaGrange, to-day.

Extract from a local history series ...
A county jail was built in Titusville in 1880 by F. B. Sackett, who was paid $565. The jail burned two years later, killing four prisoners chained to the floor.

Floridiana.

—Mr. F. B. Sackett, of Titusville, has taken this year, nearly 900 pounds of honey from only six hives of bees. Bee raising is soon destined to become a prominent industry, it seems on the river there.
—The Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville, Florida, 8 Jun 1883, p 3
—The Titusville Star says: Although the pineapples have been killed on the west shore of Indian river in this section, on the east shore near Banana creek they will come out again. F. B. Sackett has about 5,000 plants which were not protected the least, and he will not lose one in fifty. At the time of the freeze he had quite a number of plants with fruit on and had also shipped a few. Where the heart of the pine is sometimes killed a new sucker plant starts from the root.
—The Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville, Florida, 23 Feb 1886, p 3
Mr. F. B. Sackett, postmaster of Heath, Brevard county, and owner of one of the finest orange groves in the State, was in the city to-day and showed your representative some fine oranges, specimens of that region's product. Mr. Sackett said that since the advent of steamboats and railroads, and viewing the future construction of the East Coast Canal and Atlantic Coast Line as a likely possibility, the Indian River country had been steadily moving forward to a place of importance in the commerce of Florida, and that soon she would stand at the head of the fruit growing regions of the world.

The Florida Freeze.
Reports from Different Sections of the State Concerning the Late Unpleasantness.
At Heath, Indian River.
Editor Florida Agriculturist:
In compliance with your request for information as to the amount of damage done in this section by the late freeze, I will say that the thermometer went down to 36°, and there was quite a heavy frost for this section. The exposed leaves on the bananas have turned brown, but the fruit is not hurt. The tops of two of my lemon trees that were in bloom have dropped their leaves. Sapodilla, sugar apple, guava, mammee apple and coffee trees dropped some leaves at the top, but the bloom was not hurt, as you will see when you receive the package I have sent. It contains branches from the top of the coffee tree with bloom on and also from the lower branches containing leaves. The tops of the pine apple leaves were nipped—the fruit not hurt. Beans hurt in spots. Irish potatoes not hurt. Tomatoes hurt in exposed places. None of my plants or trees had any protection whatever, as I was not at my place at the time of the cold snap.
F. B. Sackett.
Heath, Fla.
[As corroborative of his statement that but little damage was done by the frost, Mr. Sackett sends us a cluster of twigs from a coffee plant full of blooms and buds and uninjured by the frost or anything else. Also a nice bunch of roses showing no effects of the cold weather.—Ed.].

—Mr. F. B. Sackett of Heath, arrived in Titusville last week. Mr. Sackett says he has sold his crop of coffee for this year (which will be about five pounds from one tree) to the agricultural department of Washington, for $5 a pound.
