Carrie M Sackett

FatherCharles E Sackett (1842-)
MotherHannah Catherine Osterhout (1842-1910)
Birthabout 1866, PennsylvaniaG
Death27 March 1935, Liberty, Susquehanna County, PennsylvaniaG
Marriage12 March 1886, PennsylvaniaGJohn H Sodan1
Marriage13 December 1892, Chenango Forks, Broome County, New York StateGLyman Stoddard2
Carrie M Sackett, daughter of Charles E Sackett and Hannah Catherine Osterhout, was born in PennsylvaniaG about 1866. She married first in PennsylvaniaG on 12 March 1886, John H Sodan.1 John was born in New York StateG on 18 March 1839.3,4 He died aged 53 in Susquehanna CountyG in August 1892 and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, HallsteadG.5 She married second at Chenango Forks, Broome County, New York StateG, on 13 December 1892, Lyman Stoddard, son of Herman Stoddard and Mercy Taylor.2 Lyman was born in PennsylvaniaG on 24 March 1842.6,7 He died aged 82 in Liberty, Susquehanna County, PennsylvaniaG, on 7 January 1925 and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, HallsteadG.8
In 1880 Carrie was living in Liberty, Susquehanna County, PennsylvaniaG, in the household of her mother Hannah and stepfather Eli Mott, and was recorded in the census as Carrie M Sacett [sic], aged 14 and born in Pennsylvania.9
In 1900 she was living in Liberty, Susquehanna County, PennsylvaniaG, in the household of her second husband Lyman Stoddard, 58, and was recorded as Carrie M Stoddard, aged 42. Living with them were their sons, Forest, 4, and Chauncey, aged one, and Carrie's sons by her first marriage, Charles Sodan, 9, and Leroy Sodan, aged seven.10
Carrie's first husband John Sodan filed for an invalidity pension in March 1879 following his service during the Civil War in the Pennsylvania Infantry. Carrie received a widow's pension from August 1892 following his death. Her second husband Lyman Stoddard was also a Civil War veteran, having served in the 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He received an invalidity pension from June 1880, and Carrie became entitled to a widow's pension from February 1925 following his death.11,12
Contradictory records after 1901
The records for Carrie up to 1901, when her son Ernest was born, are consistent, with minor variations, with a woman born in the mid-1860s. A number of later records are found for a Carrie Stoddard, wife of Lyman Stoddard, but these appear to relate to a much older woman, born in the early 1840s. The discrepancy is unresolved. The later records are stated below.
In 1910 Carrie was living at Hallstead Road, LibertyG, in the household of her husband Lyman, 68, and was recorded in the census as Carrie Stoddard, aged 66.13
In 1920 she was living in LibertyG in the household of her husband Lyman, 77, a retired soldier, and was recorded as Carrie M Stoddard, aged 76.14
A Carrie M Stoddard, widow of Lyman Stoddard, died aged 91 in Liberty, Susquehanna County, PennsylvaniaG, on 27 March 1935 and was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, HallsteadG, on 30 March 1935.15,16 The gravestone has the inscription "Mother/ Carrie Sodan Stoddard/ 1843 - 1935."
Comments
The informant providing information for Carrie's death certificate was apparently her son Ernest. A precise birth date, 2 July 1843, was recorded. This is inconsistent with the birth date of May 1858 given for Carrie in the 1900 census. This large discrepancy must suggest that the records relate to two different women. However, other details appear to be a match. Lyman and Carrie Stoddard of the 1900 census had children, Forest and Chancy. Ernest, born in 1901, identified his parents on his three marriage records as Lyman and Carrie. A newspaper obituary for Carrie, presumably also informed by Ernest, identifies Carrie as the widow of Lyman and names her children as Pearl, DeForest, Chauncey, and Ernest. A further inconsistency arises between the date of birth recorded on Carrie's death certificate and Ernest's own date of birth. The dates would mean that Carrie was aged 57 at Ernest's birth.
