William W Sacket

MotherMercy Sackett (c 1814-1892)
Birthabout 1838, MassachusettsG
Death3 July 1916, Kennebec, MaineG,1
William W Sacket, probably the son of Mercy Sackett, was born in MassachusettsG about 1838. He died aged 78 at the National Soldiers Home, Kennebec, MaineG, on 3 July 1916.1
In 1850 William was living in Westfield, Hampden County, MassachusettsG, and was recorded in the census as William Sacket, aged eleven and born in Massachusetts. He was living with his assumed mother Mercy in the household of Mercy's mother Polly Sacket.2
In 1855 he was living in WestfieldG and was recorded as William Sacket, a machinist, aged 17. He was living with Mercy, 42, in the household of Mercy's mother Polly.3
In 1860 he was living in WestfieldG in the household of Mercy Sackett, and was recorded as William W Halliday, a whip maker, aged 21.4
William served as a Union soldier during the American Civil War, enlisting in the 27th Infantry regiment in MassachusettsG on 2 November 1861. He was mustered out in New Berne, North Carolina, on 1 November 1864, after three years' service. He was granted an invalidity pension on 15 September 1879.5,6
In 1870 he was living in WestfieldG in the household of Mercy Sackett, and was recorded as William Sackett, aged 31, working in a still [presumably a distillery].7
In 1880 he was living in WestfieldG in the household of Mercy Sackett, and was recorded as William W Sackett, a machinist, single, aged 42 and born in Massachusetts.8
William Halliday/Sackett is listed with Mercy Sackett in all census records and, although no definitive evidence has been found, it would seem probable that he was her son.
