Obituary.
Email from Barbara Bell to Sackett Discussion List 8 August 2006.

This is the obituary for Sackett Chellborg, from the "Sea Cliff News"
for April 3, 1926. My father liked to remember that Theodore Roosevelt,
Jr. attended the funeral at their house. (Sackett was my father's
grandfather.)

C. S. CHELLBORG PASSES ON

Impressive Service for Prominent Citizen Held Yesterday

Several hundred sincere friends made through many years of kindly
association, gathered at the home of Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Bell Friday
afternoon to pay their last tribute to C. Sackett Chellborg, who after a
long period of illness, passed away suddenly Tuesday evening after
having spent an unusually active, busy and happy day.

Mr. Chellborg was born at Geneva, N.Y., and would have been
seventy-two years old May 29th. For the past thirty-five years he has
been a resident of Sea Cliff and during that time he has rendered almost
constant service as a public official and has played a prominent part in
the social, civic and religious life of the community.

Mr. Chellborg until very recently was president of the Official
Board of the Methodist Church; until last November he was an assessor of
the Town of Oyster Bay; for many years he was an enthusiastic member of
the fire department and was also one of the charter members of the Sea
Cliff Club which had its origin among a congenial group of men who later
incorporated and built the Sea Cliff bathing pavilion, now owned by the
village. His political interests were Republican and he was a member of
the National Republican Committee as well as active in the local party
affairs. The Sea Cliff Yacht Club, which for many years was the social
center of the vicinity, elected him secretary for twenty-five years. Mr
Chellborg also served as a village assessor and as postmaster of the
village for seven years. He was a Village Trustee for eight years
serving with the administration of the late Frank Sherwood. His
devotion to the affairs in which he was interested was constant and for
many years he attended the annual reunions of the early graduates of
Public School No. 40 in New York where his boyhood was spent.

In recognition of this public service the flag of the village has
been at half mast and in deference to Mrs. Chellborg, president of the
Library Board, the Stenson Memorial Library was closed yesterday. The
Legion Auxiliary, of which both Mrs. Chellborg and Mrs. Bell are
officers, postponed their meetings of the week.

Mr. Chellborg is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alice Chellborg; a
daughter, Mrs. A. M. Bell; a son, Frederick Chellborg; and three
sisters, the Misses Gunilla I., Julia R. S. and Ida Chellborg, all of
Sea Cliff.

The Rev. H. J. Hartman, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated
at the services at the house and Glen Cove Lodge, F. & A. M., attended
in a body and conducted the commitment services at Hillside Cemetery.

The Village Board held a special meeting Thursday evening and
passed the following resolutions:

WHEREAS, In the Wise Providence of Almighty God, death has taken
from us our esteemed citizen, C. Sackett Chellborg, and

WHEREAS, For eight years as a member of the Board of Trustees of
the Village of Sea Cliff and as official in various other capacities he
served the Village faithfully, conscientiously and well, which service
renders it due to his memory that we should offer this tribute to our
late friend and associate; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That in his death we mourn the loss of C. Sackett
Chellborg and we deeply sympathize with his family in their great
bereavement; that the flag be placed at half mast for ten days on all
public buildings in the Village; that a copy of these resolutions be
transmitted to his family and also to the press.

Birth11 May 18481
Death1863, GettysburgG,1
Cornelius L Bailey, son of George W Bailey and Sally Sackett, was born on 11 May 1848.1 He died at GettysburgG in 1863.1
Cornelius Bailey served in the American Civil War as a Corporal in the 126th Regiment, New York State Volunteers. He was the youngest non-commissioned officer to fight in the Union Army. He enlisted in 1862 at the age of 14, and participated within weeks in the Battle of Harper's Ferry. He was killed in action, aged 15, in the Battle of Gettysburg.
4605. Cornelius L. Baley, 1848–1863, son of George W. Baley and (1903) Sally Sackett, was one of the youngest soldiers, and unquestionably the very youngest non-commissioned officer who served in the Union army as a fighting soldier, during the war of the rebellion. He was born on his father's farm near Romulus, Seneca County, N. Y., May 11, 1848, and from there enlisted, Aug. 4, 1862, as a private soldier in Company C, 126th Regiment, N. Y. S. Vols., of which Hon. Eliakim Sherrill was commissioned colonel. On Aug. 22, young Baley was, with his regiment, mustered into the United States service, and three weeks later was under fire on Maryland Heights at Harper's Ferry. Here his regiment, after gallantly defending the position assigned it with a loss of thirteen killed and forty-two wounded, was surrendered with the remaining portion of General Milroy's command, to Stonewall Jackson's attacking force. Three days later the 126th N. Y., having in the interim been paroled, was on its way to the Union parole camp at Chicago, Ill., where it remained two months, awaiting notice of exchange. It was then ordered to Union Hill, Virginia, where it encamped during the winter of 1862-3. In June following, it was attached to Willard's Brigade, Second Corps, Army of Potomac. As the regiment marched from its winter's camp, Cornelius L. Baley was wearing the stripes of a corporal, for which he carried a warrant signed by Colonel Sherrill. Then came the great battle of Gettysburgh, into which the 126th moved with a total strength of 445 officers and men; and out of which it came carrying as trophies, five Confederate battle flags, captured in desperate and deadly conflict; for they left behind them there of their number the appalling total of 231, dead, dying and wounded, and ten unaccounted for. In the official list of their killed on that gory field--which was in fact the turning point in the great war for the preservation of the Union--we read the names of Colonel Eliakim Sherrell, their able commander, and of Cornelius L. Baley, their gallant boy corporal.
