Obituary
Packaging-design pioneer DeForest Sackett, 88
By Kenan Heise
Tribune Staff Writer
DeForest Sackett, 88, a product packaging designer, played a key role in helping Chicago to earn a reputation as a design center. He was a founder and later president of both the Society of Typographic Arts and the Twenty-Seven Designers.
A resident of Fontana, Wis. and formerly of La Grange, he died at home Nov. 30.
Mr. Sackett attended Elgin High School. He also graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.
His career as an artist began in the art department of the Tribune. He left it to become art director for Walgreen drugstores, designing much of the firm’s early product packaging.
In 1939, he left Walgreens to form his own firm, DeForest Sackett and Associates. There, as one of the early artists in the field, he became noted for his work on trademarks. Among his most famous works was the redesign in 1946 of the Standard Oil torch.
"He was way ahead of himself in terms of design," his son, Ross, said. "He was, however, a very self-effacing man and was not interested in using his position in his own self-interest or to attain fame. He worked helping to get members of the Bauhaus out of Nazi Germany during the 1930s, but did not claim credit for it. He also worked with Container Corp. in using early computers to bring color into packaging."
Survivors, besides his son, include his twin brother, DeLester; two other sons, James and Dr. David; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Plans for a memorial service are pending.
