Stephen Setterfield Sackett, carrier, coal-meter, and fish shop keeper, of Margate, Kent, son of Thomas Sackett and Martha Setterfield, was born in MargateG in 18381 and baptized at St John in ThanetG on 2 December 1838.2 He died aged 72 in ThanetG in 1911.3 He married first at Holy Trinity, MargateG, on 6 September 1863, Rebecca Sarah Mason, daughter of Andrew Haines Mason.4,5 Rebecca was born in RamsgateG about 18407,8 and died aged about 53 in ThanetG in 1894.9 He married second in ThanetG in 1895, Mary Ann Darby.6 She was born in MargateG about 184210 and died aged 85 in ThanetG in 1928.11
In 1841 Stephen was living at King Street, St John, Margate, KentG, in the household of his parents Thomas and Martha, and was recorded in the census as Stephen Sackett, aged two and born in Kent.12
In 1851 he was living at King Street, St John's, MargateG, in the household of his father Thomas Sackett, a carrier, and was recorded as Stephen Sackett, aged 12, and born in Margate.13
It would appear that Stephen went into service during his late teens, perhaps in Dover. He was convicted there on 12 October 1855 of "larceny by servant" and sentenced to two months' imprisonment.14
In 1861 he was living at King Street, MargateG, in the household of his brother William, and was recorded as Stephen Sackett, a carrier, unmarried, aged 23, and born in Margate.15
In 1871 he was living at 1 Wellclose Square, Margate, KentG, and was recorded as Stephen S Sackett, a coal-meter,16 head of household, married, aged 32, and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Rebecca, aged 30, and born in Ramsgate, and daughter Elizabeth, aged 6, and born in Margate. Also in the household were a boarder William Solley, and visitors, Sarah Holmes, and her children, William, and George.8
In 1881 he was living at 30 Northumberland Road, St John's, MargateG, and was recorded as Stephen S Sackett, a common carrier, head of household, married, aged 42 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Rebecca, 41, their daughter Elizabeth, 16, Rebecca's father Andrew H Macey [sic: Mason on Rebecca's marriage record], 69, and Stephen's nephew George Sackett, 29.17
In 1899 Stephen was a cab proprietor and was running oyster rooms at 1 Trinity Hill, MargateG.18
In 1901 he was living at 1a Trinity Hill, Holy Trinity, MargateG, and was recorded as Stephen S Sackett, a fish shop keeper on his own account, head of household, married, aged 62, and born in Margate. Living with him was his second wife Mary, aged 58 and born in Canterbury, Kent.19
In 1911 he was living at 11 Gladstone Road, MargateG, in the household of his daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Henry Murton, and was recorded as Stephen Sackett, an invalid, aged 72 and born in Margate.20 Stephen's wife Mary, 67, was living at the George & Dragon, Charlotte Square, MargateG, where she was the proprietress.21
In 1921 Stephen's widow Mary was living at the George & DragonG and was recorded in the census as Mary Sackett, a licensed victualler, an employer, head of household, a widow, aged 77.22
