The son of a yeoman farmer, John Arnold (1720–92) spent his life in the small village of Great Warley, Essex, 17 miles north of London. He was active throughout his life in village affairs, but put most of his considerable energy into music. From the age of 19 he styled himself 'Philo-Musicæ', and his passion for music drove his activities as editor, composer, performer and concert organiser.
...
The family was fairly comfortably off, for John Arnold senior owned several small farms and other property in the village.
...
In 1753 Arnold brought out the third edition of The Compleat Psalmodist. ... Then, on 18 October there was an announcement in the London Evening Post: 'A few Days since Mr. John Arnold, jun. of Great Warley in Essex, Gentleman Farmer, (Author of the Compleat Psalmist and Essex Harmony) was married, at Hornchurch in the same County, to Miss Sackette of Hornchurch, a young Lady of fine Accomplishments, and a good Fortune.'
Arnold married into his own class, for Elizabeth's father owned farm land and grazing marshes in the adjoining parish of Hornchurch. ... A new John Arnold was born in 1758, but the baby boy lived for only a few weeks. There were also three daughters, but the youngest died when just over a year old; Arnold's wife died in 1766 and he never remarried.
