Richard Sackett, carpenter of Hornchurch, Essex, son of Richard Sackett of South Weald, Essex and Elizabeth ___, was born in South Weald, EssexG, in 1695 and baptized there on 27 October 1695.1 He died aged 62 in HornchurchG on 17 April 1758 and was buried at St Andrew's, HornchurchG.4,5 He married at Fleet Prison, LondonG, on 10 January 1738/39, Mary Baker, a widow. The location of the marriage, at Fleet Prison, defines it as an irregular or clandestine marriage. Such marriages were performed without the formality of banns or a licence by some clergymen, often those imprisoned for debt, who used the fees to pay for privileges such as the right to live outside the prison gates. Quite why Richard and Mary sought such a no-questions-asked marriage is not known.2,3
Richard was named as a beneficiary in his brother Thomas's will made in HornchurchG on 2 June 1754. He was left a sum of five guineas.6
