Anson W Sackett was born in Massachusetts^G about 1793.¹ His parents have not been identified, but see below. He married first, probably by about 1825 when a son William was born. The name of the first wife, who was probably also the mother of children Harvey and Almira, is not known. He married second Lydia Raymond, daughter of John Raymond, before 1839 when their daughter Elizabeth was born. Lydia would also have been the mother of Edwin and Henry. Lydia was born in Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1802.¹
     Anson served for six months as a Private in Colonel Benedict's Regiment of New York Militia during the War of 1812, enlisting in July 1812. In 1853, he received a warrant for 160 acres of land in Edgar, Illinois. The late grant of a warrant may have been because he was unaware of his right to land or because eligibility had been expanded by the 1850 Bounty Land Act. Evidently, Anson did not remove to what would probably have been undeveloped land several hundred miles away. It is likely that he sold the warrant on. At age 64 in 1857 he further received $92 plus interest in respect of six months' unpaid service and the cost of equipment and clothing he had supplied during his service.^2,3,4,5
     Anson was listed in the 1820 census as a householder in Sullivan, Madison County, New York State^G.⁶
     In 1850 Anson was living in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York State^G, and was recorded in the census as Anson W Sackett, a shoemaker, aged 57 and born in Massachusetts. Living with him were his wife Lydia, 48, and their children, William, 25, Harvey, 22, Edwin, 19, and Henry, aged six.⁷
     Anson was appointed US Postmaster for Kirkville, Onondaga County, New York State^G, on 7 October 1851.⁸
     In 1855 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Anson W Sacket, a shoemaker, aged 62. Living with him were his wife Lydia, 52, their sons, Edwin, 14, and Henry, 10, and their grandson Eugene Tupper, aged three.⁹
     Lydia was named as a beneficiary in the will of her father John Raymond, made in Manlius^G on 1 November 1854 and proved there on 21 November 1856. She was left the house in Kirkville which she and Anson then occupied and an annuity of $75.¹⁰
     In 1860 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as A W Sackett, a mail carrier, aged 67. His wife Lydia, 57, was living with him.¹¹
     In 1865 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Anson W Sackett, aged 74. His wife Lydia, 62, was living with him. Their children, Harvey, Almira, and Edwin, and their families were living in the same house.¹²
     Anson was listed in the Post Office, Mail Messenger Service, records in 1865, receiving a payment of $35.¹³
     A Lydia Sackett aged 8 [sic] listed in the 1870 census in the household of Benjamin and Almira Jordan in Manlius^G was probably Anson's widow Lydia, then about 78.¹⁴
Anson's parents
     Birth and death records for Anson have not been found. Census records state that he was born in Massachusetts. His age in those records and in military records indicates a birth date of about 1793.
     Of the families resident in Massachusetts at that time, Zavan Sacket Sr and his wife Abigail Bills would be possible parents. Although no direct evidence has been found, some circumstantial evidence would support such a theory.
     Zavan and Abigail, and three of their sons, each with their families, had moved west from Westfield, Massachusetts, to Meadville, Pennsylvania, by about 1820. In making this journey, their most likely route would have been via the Great Genesee Road, a major route for settlers moving west through New York State, from Albany, through Schenectady, Utica, and on to Syracuse. Nearby Sullivan, where Anson was living in 1820, and Manlius, then a notable provision stop, where he lived in later years, are on this route.
     He could have met and married his wife in or near Manlius and remained there near her family.
Anson's wives and children
     The 1865 census indicates that Anson and Lydia's marriage was a second marriage for them both, making uncertain the identity of the mother of Anson's children. Lydia's father John Raymond named Anson and Lydia's daughter Elizabeth in his will, but did not name other grandchildren. Elizabeth was evidently a sickly child and lived with her grandfather, perhaps singling her out for special treatment in his will. Given the gap in their ages, it is assumed that Anson's first three children were of his first marriage, the next three being of his marriage to Lydia.

Edwin A Sackett, son of Anson W Sackett and Lydia Raymond, was born in Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1841.¹ He married about 1860, Mary S ___. Mary was born in Herkimer County, New York State^G, about 1838.¹
     In 1850 Edwin was living in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York State^G, in the household of his parents Anson and Lydia, and was recorded in the census as Edwin Sackett, aged 19 [sic: 9] and born in New York.²
     In 1855 he was living in Manlius^G in the household of his parents Anson and Lydia, and was recorded as Edwin Sacket, aged 14 and born in Onondaga County.³
     In 1865 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Edwin A Sackett, a boatman on the canal, aged 24. Living with him were his wife Mary, 27, and their children, Millie, 3, and Nellie, aged one.⁴
     In 1870 he was living in Manlius^G in the household of his brother Harvey and sister-in-law Martha, and was recorded as Edwin Sackett, a boatman, aged 27. His daughter Elizabeth [presumably Nellie], aged five, was living with him.⁵

Henry Clay Sackett, son of Anson W Sackett and Lydia Raymond, was born in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1844.¹ He married about 1865, Nellie ___. Nellie was born in New York State^G about 1846.¹
     In 1850 Henry was living in Manlius^G in the household of his parents Anson and Lydia, and was recorded in the census as Henry C Sackett, aged six and born in New York.²
     In 1855 he was living in Manlius^G in the household of his parents Anson and Lydia, and was recorded as Henry Clay Sacket, aged ten and born in Onondaga County.³
     In 1870 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as H C Sackett, a store clerk, aged 24. Living with him were his wife Nellie, 24, and their children, Frankie, 3, and George, aged nine months.⁴

Harvey Sackett, son of Anson W Sackett and ___ ___, was born in Madison County, New York State^G, about 1828.¹ He married about 1855, Martha ___. Martha was born in Onondaga County^G about 1833.¹
     In 1850 Harvey was living in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York State^G, in the household of his parents Anson and Lydia, and was recorded in the census as Harvey Sackett, a boatman, aged 22 and born in New York.²
     In 1855 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Harvey Sacket, a boatman, aged 27. Living with him were his wife Martha, 22, and their daughter Iola, aged two.³
     In 1860 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Harvey Sackett, a boatman, aged 31. Living with him were his wife Martha, 27, and their children, Iola, 7, Minnie, 3, and Hiawatha, aged one.⁴
     In 1865 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Harvy Sackett, a boatman on the canal, aged 37 and born in Madison County. Living with him were his wife Martha, 32, and their children, Minnie, 8, and Onalaska, aged one.⁵
     In 1870 he was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Harvey Sackett, a boatman, aged 40. Living with him were his wife Martha, 38, and their children, Minnie, 14, and Onalaska, 5. Also in the household were Harvey's brother Edwin, 27, and Edwin's daughter Elizabeth, aged five.⁶

William H Sackett, son of Anson W Sackett and ___ ___, was born in New York State^G about 1825.¹ He died in Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan^G, on 1 October 1899.²
     In 1850 William was living in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York State^G, in the household of his parents Anson and Lydia, and was recorded in the census as William H Sackett, a boatman, aged 25 and born in New York.³

Almira Sackett, daughter of Anson W Sackett and ___ ___, was born in Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1830.¹ She married first about 1850, ___ Tupper. She married second before 1860, Benjamin Jordan.¹
     In 1860 Almira was living in Manlius, Onondaga County^G, in the household of her husband Benjamin Jordan, 29, a mason, and was recorded in the census as Almira Jordan, aged 30 and born in New York. Her son Harvey Eugene, 9, from her first marriage was living with them.²
     In 1865 she was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Almira Jordan, aged 35 and born in Onondaga County. She was living with her husband Benjamin Jordan. Her son Eugene Tupper, 12, was living with them.³
     In 1870 she was living in Manlius^G in the household of her husband Benjamin, 37, a brick mason, and was recorded as Almira Jordan, aged 39. Living with them was a Lydia Sackett, age 8. This was probably Almira's mother, aged 78.⁴

Eugene Tupper, son of ___ Tupper and Almira Sackett, was born in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1852.¹
     In 1855 Eugene was living in Manlius^G in the household of his grandparents Anson and Lydia, and was recorded in the census as Eugene Tupper, aged three and born in Onondaga County.²
     In 1860 he was living in Manlius^G in the household of his mother Almira and stepfather Benjamin Jordan, and was recorded as Harvey E Jordan [sic], aged nine.³
     In 1865 he was living in Manlius^G in the household of his mother Almira and stepfather Benjamin Jordan, and was recorded as Eugene H Tupper, aged twelve.⁴

Minnie H Sackett, daughter of Harvey Sackett and Martha ___, was born in Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1857.¹
     In 1860 Minnie was living in Manlius, Onondaga County^G, in the household of her parents Harvey and Martha, and was recorded in the census as Mine H Sackett, aged three and born in New York.²
     In 1865 she was living in Manlius^G in the household of her parents Harvey and Martha, and was recorded as Minnie H Sackett, aged eight and born in Onondaga County.³
     In 1870 she was living in Manlius^G in the household of her parents Harvey and Martha, and was recorded as Minnie Sackett, aged 14.⁴

Onalaska Sackett, son of Harvey Sackett and Martha ___, was born in Onondaga County, New York State^G, on 27 July 1863.^1,2 He died aged 37 in Syracuse, Onondaga County^G, on 2 March 1901 and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse^G.³
     In 1865 Onalaska was living in Manlius, Onondaga County^G, in the household of his parents Harvey and Martha, and was recorded in the census as Onalaska Sackett, aged one and born in Onondaga County.⁴
     In 1870 he was living in Manlius^G in the household of his parents Harvey and Martha, and was recorded as Only Alaska [sic], aged five.⁵

Millie I Sackett, daughter of Edwin A Sackett and Mary S ___, was born in Madison County, New York State^G, about 1861.¹
     In 1865 Millie was living in Manlius^G in the household of her parents Edwin and Mary, and was recorded in the census as Millie I Sackett, aged three and born in Madison County.²

Nellie E Sackett, daughter of Edwin A Sackett and Mary S ___, was born in Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1863.¹
     In 1865 Nellie was living in Manlius^G in the household of her parents Edwin and Mary, and was recorded in the census as Millie I Sackett, aged one and born in Onondaga County.²
     In 1870 she was living in Manlius^G and was recorded as Elizabeth Sackett, aged five. She was living with her father Edwin in the household of Edwin's brother Harvey and sister-in-law Martha.³

Iola Sackett, daughter of Harvey Sackett and Martha ___, was born in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1853.¹
     In 1855 Iola was living in Manlius^G in the household of her parents Harvey and Martha, and was recorded in the census as Iola Sacket, aged two and born in Onondaga County.²
     In 1860 she was living in Manlius^G in the household of her parents Harvey and Martha, and was recorded as Iola Sackett, aged seven.³

Hiawatha Sackett, son of Harvey Sackett and Martha ___, was born in New York State^G about 1859.¹
     In 1860 Hiawatha was living in Manlius, Onondaga County^G, in the household of his parents Harvey and Martha, and was recorded in the census as Hiawatha Sackett, aged one and born in New York.²

Elizabeth Sackett, daughter of Anson W Sackett and Lydia Raymond, was born in Onondaga County, New York State^G, about 1839. She died aged about 24 in Onondaga County^G on 6 November 1863 and was buried at Kirkville Cemetery, Kirkville, Onondaga County, New York State^G.¹
     In 1850 Elizabeth was living in Manlius, Onondaga County^G, in the household of her grandfather John Raymond and his wife Rebecca, and was recorded in the census as Elisabeth Raymond [sic], aged eleven and born in New York.²
     In 1855 she was living in Manlius^G in the household of her grandfather John Raymond and his wife Rebecca, and was recorded as Elizabeth Sacket, aged 16.³
     Elizabeth was named as a beneficiary in the will of her grandfather John Raymond, made in Manlius^G on 1 November 1854 and proved there on 21 November 1856. She was left a sum of $150 at age 21 or upon earlier marriage.⁴
     In 1860 she was living in Manlius^G in the household of her step-grandmother Rebecca Raymond, and was recorded as Elisabeth Sackett, an invalid, aged 21.⁵

Frankie Sackett, son of Henry Clay Sackett and Nellie ___, was born in New York State^G about 1867.¹
     In 1870 Frankie was living in Manlius, Onondaga County, New York State^G, in the household of his parents Henry and Nellie, and was recorded in the census as Frankie Sackett, aged three and born in New York.²
