Virginia S. Phebus died March 1, 2008, in Champaign, at the age of 91.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, Illinois 61874 with Reverend Stephen Pichaske officiating. Virginia was born October 8, 1916, in Champaign, Illinois. She was the daughter of Arthur Dillavou and Ada Van Patton Sackett.
As a girl, she and her sister, Elva, spent many summers in Bay View, Michigan, with their parents. Their Bay View Cottage was home to many special memories shared between Virginia and her family. There she instilled her love for Bay View into her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Virginia went to Colonel Wolfe grade school and graduated from Champaign High School.
Since childhood, she was a devoted fan of the University of Illinois Athletics. As a girl, she and a friend set up a lemonade stand on the University of Illinois Campus trying to lure Red Grange in for a drink. He never bought one, but they did see him walk by on the campus several times.
After graduation from the University of Illinois in 1939, she worked for a time in California for West Airlines. Later, she worked for an insurance company in Springfield, Illinois, and then returned to Champaign to work at the County Clerk's office. There she met Darius Phebus. When she married him, she became part of a family with four children, a cat, and a dog. Their four children are: Joseph (Carolyn) Phebus, an attorney in Urbana; Mary (Richard) Killey a high school teacher in Roseville; Margaret (Larry) Moore, a nurse anesthetist of Roseville; and William (Nancy) Phebus, the president of Alt-Terra Survey of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Darius Phebus, and her sister, Elva Sackett.
Virginia enjoyed her many friendships and had a wonderful sense of humor. When she was with her family and friends, laughter was sure to accompany whatever they did.
She and Darius enjoyed traveling in the United States and various other countries. When she was in her 70's, she walked on the Great Wall of China.
As grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived, she loved spending time with them.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Urbana, Delta Delta Delta Sorority alumni, and the University of Illinois Athletic Association. She loved U of I sports and seldom passed up a chance to go to a game.
Memorials can be made to the Cunningham Children's Home, 1301 North Cunningham, Urbana or to the Roseville Kid's Place, Roseville, Illinois 61473.
