Martin VanBuren Sackett, son of Charles Sackett and Eliza Ann DeGraw, was born in Redford Township, Wayne County, MichiganG, on 10 May 1840.1 He died aged 73 on 13 March 19141 and was buried at Bell Branch Cemetery, RedfordG.1 He married on 20 November 1862, Susan Amy Booth.1
     Martin Sackett served as a soldier in the American Civil War. He enlisted for three years in Company I, Seventh Infantry, at Detroit on 13 January 1862 and was mustered the same day. He was wounded in action at Antietam, Maryland, on 17 September 1862, and was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability at Baltimore, Maryland, on 4 January 1863.1
     In 1850 Martin was living in Redford, MichiganG, in the household of his parents Charles and Eliza, and was recorded in the census as Martin V B Sackett, aged ten and born in Michigan.2
     In 1870 Martin was living in Redford Township, Wayne County, MichiganG, and was recorded in the census as Martin Sacket, farm worker, aged 29 and born in Michigan. Living with him were his wife Susan, 25, and their children, Nellie, 2, and Charles, aged one.3
     In 1880 he was living in RedfordG and was recorded as Martin Sackett, laborer, head of household, married, aged 40 and born in Michigan. Living with him were his wife Susan, 35, and their children, Nellie, 13, Olivia, 8, Eva, 6, Cora, 4, Ettie, 2, and David, aged six months.4
