Edward Cleve Goldfinch, mariner, son of Stephen Goldfinch and Harriet Sackett Spain, was born in Margate, KentG, in 1873.1,2 He died aged about 62 in Thanet, KentG, in 1935.3 He married in ThanetG in 1893, Mary Louise Farrett.4,5 Mary was born in RamsgateG on 12 August 18731,6 and died aged 98 in ThanetG in 1972.6
In 1881 Edward was living at 160 King Street, RamsgateG, in the household of his grandparents George and Susannah Wetherhead, and was recorded in the census as Edward G Goldfinch, a scholar, aged seven and born in Margate.7
On 5 April 1891, the night of the census, Edward was on board the sailing ship "Cornucopia", moored in the River Wear, Sunderland, County DurhamG. He was listed as Edward Goldfinch, a cook, one of six crewmen, aged 17 and born in Margate. The ship was of 206 tons and was engaged in the coasting trade.8
In 1901 he was living at 3 Castle Road, St Lawrence, RamsgateG, and was recorded as Edward Goldfinch, a general labourer, head of household, married, aged 27 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Mary, 28, and their children, Beatrice, 7, Alfred, 5, Violet, 3, and Frederick, aged one.9
In 1911 he was living at 9 Rodney Street, RamsgateG, and was recorded as Edward Goldfinch, a mariner, head of household, married, aged 38 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Mary, 38, and their children, Beatrice, 17, Alfred, 16, Violet, 13, Frederick, 11, Hilda, 9, Edward, 6, and Sidney, aged one.10
