John Hogbin, auctioneer, son of John Hogbin and Phoebe Sackett, was born in Margate, KentG, in 1836 and baptized at St John in ThanetG on 16 October 1836.1 He died aged 76 in Herne Bay, KentG, on 6 August 1913.2,3 He married first in Thanet, KentG, in 1859, Mary Ann Apps, daughter of ___ Apps and Sarah ___.4,5 Mary Ann was born in Ramsgate, KentG, in about 18286 and died aged 63 in Herne BayG in 1891.7 He married second in Louth, LincolnshireG, in 1894, Catherine Augusta Cresswell.8,9
     John Hogbin was engaged in business as an auctioneer and upholsterer. His will indicates that he prospered, and he was described in his son Leonard's marriage record by the honorific "gentleman."
     In 1841 John was living at Hardres Street, RamsgateG, in the household of his parents John and Phoebe, and was recorded in the census as John Hogben, aged four and born in Kent.10
     In 1851 he was living at 15 Hardres Street, RamsgateG, in the household of his parents John and Phoebe, and was recorded as John Hogbin, a smith's son, aged 14 and born in St John's.11
     In 1861 he was living at Mortimer Street, Herne BayG, and was recorded as John Hogbin, an upholsterer, head of household, married, aged 25 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Mary Ann, 32, and their son Charles, aged one month. Also in the household was Mary Ann's mother Sarah Epps, 66, presumably visiting to help with the baby.12
     In 1871 he was living at Victoria House, William Street, Herne BayG, and was recorded as John Hogbin, auctioneer, head of household, married, aged 34 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Mary Ann, 40, and their children, Charles, 10, Amy, 7, Leonard, 5, and John, aged five months. Also in the household were two servants: a cook and a nurse.13
     In 1881 he was living at Victoria House, Herne BayG, and was recorded as John Hogbin, auctioneer and upholsterer (employing 6 men), head of household, married, aged 44 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Mary Ann, 52, their children, Charles, 20, Amy, 17, Alice, 12, and Alfred, and a niece, Edith Mary Marsh, aged three. Also in the household was a female domestic servant.14
     John was named as a beneficiary in his uncle Benjamin Watten Sackett's will made in RamsgateG on 5 December 1881.15
     John proved his mother Phoebe's will on 20 July 1889. Her estate was valued at £3,043.16
     In 1891 he was living at Victoria House, 52 William Street, Herne BayG, and was recorded as John Hogbin, auctioneer & upholsterer, head of household, married, aged 54 and born in Margate. Living with him were his wife Mary Ann, 63, their unmarried children, Charles, 30, Leonard, 25, Alice, 22, and Alfred, 21, and Mary Ann's widowed sister Eliza Sanders, 70. Also in the household was a female domestic servant.17
     In 1901 he was living at Victoria House, 52 William Street, Herne Bay, KentG, and was recorded as John Hogbin, auctioneer, upholsterer, and shopkeeper, an employer, head of household, married, aged 61 and born in Margate. Living with him was his second wife Catherine, aged 49. Also in the household was a female domestic servant.18
     In 1911 he was living at Victoria House, William Street, Herne Bay, KentG, and was recorded as John Hogbin, a self-employed auctioneer, head of household, married, aged 74 and born in Margate. Living with him was his wife Catherine, 59. Also in the household was a female domestic servant.19
     John left a will which was proved in LondonG on 27 September 1913 by his son Leonard. His estate was valued at £6,566.3
