Alfred Apps Hogbin, son of John Hogbin and Mary Ann Apps, was born in Herne Bay, KentG, in 18691,2 and died there aged 73 on 1 February 1943.3,4 He married in Blean, KentG, in 1894, Grace Carden.5,6
     In 1871 Alfred was living at High Street, Herne Bay, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Alfred O [sic] Hogbin, aged one and born in Herne Bay. He and his sister Alice, aged two, were recorded in the household of William Tost Devine and his wife Betsy.7
     In 1881 he was living at Victoria House, Herne BayG, in the household of his parents John and Mary Ann, and was recorded as Alfred Apps Hogbin, a scholar, aged 11 and born in Herne Bay.8
     In 1891 he was living at Victoria House, 52 William Street, Herne BayG, in the household of his parents John and Mary Ann, and was recorded as Alfred A Hogbin, an upholster's assistant, single, aged 21 and born in Herne Bay.9
     In 1901 he was living at 27 Carlton Gardens, Herne BayG, and was recorded as Alfred A Hogbin, upholsterer's assistant, head of household, married, aged 30 and born in Herne Bay. Living with him were his wife Grace, 32, and their children, Clement, 5, and Aline, aged two. Also in the household was Grace's sister Emily, 25. The house was next door to that of Alfred's sister Alice.10
     In 1911 he was living at 27 Carlton Gardens, Herne BayG, and was recorded as Alfred Apps Hogbin, furniture dealer, undertaker, and upholsterer, an employer, head of household, married, aged 40 and born in Herne Bay. Living with him were his wife Grace, 42, and their children, Clement, 15, Aline, 12, and Reginald, aged ten.11
     Alfred left a will which was proved in Llandudno, Caernarvonshire, WalesG, on 21 June 1943 by his widow Grace. His estate was valued at £430.4
