Alice Kate Hogbin, daughter of John Hogbin and Mary Ann Apps, was born in Herne Bay, KentG, in 18681,2 and died there aged 51 on 1 March 1920.3,4 She married in Blean, KentG, in 1894, Thomas Frank Ridout, son of Frank A Ridout and Eliza F ___.5,6 Thomas was born in Herne BayG in 18652,7 and died there aged 87 on 29 August 1952.8,9
In 1871 Alice was living at High Street, Herne Bay, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Alice K Hogbin, aged two and born in Herne Bay. She and her brother Alfred, aged one, were recorded in the household of William Tost Devine and his wife Betsy.10
In 1881 she was living at Victoria House, Herne BayG, in the household of her parents John and Mary Ann, and was recorded as Alice Kate Hogbin, a scholar, aged 12 and born in Herne Bay.11
In 1891 she was living at Victoria House, 52 William Street, Herne BayG, in the household of her parents John and Mary Ann, and was recorded as Alice K Hogbin, an assistant in a fancy shop, single, aged 22 and born in Herne Bay.12
In 1901 she was living at 28 Carlton Gardens, Herne BayG, in the household of her husband Thomas, 35, stationers assistant, and was recorded as Alice K Ridout, aged 32 and born in Herne Bay. Visiting the household was Elizabeth M Ridout, single, 26. The house was next door to that of Alice's brother Alfred.13
In 1911 she was living at 2 William Street, Herne BayG, in the household of her husband Thomas, 45, a self-employed printer and stationer, and was recorded as Alice Kate Ridout, aged 42 and born in Herne Bay. Living with them were their children, John, 8, and Thomas, aged five. Also in the household were two female assistant stationers and a female domestic servant.14
Alice died intestate. Letters of administration of her estate were granted in LondonG on 16 December 1920 to her husband Thomas. Her effects were valued at £111.4
Thomas Ridout left a will which was proved on 13 January 1953 by his son John and nephew Harry Ridout. His estate was valued at £8,966.9
