Samuel John Sackett, a bookseller, son of John Sackett and Emmeline Alice (Hibben) Myers, was born in Bermondsey, SurreyG, on 5 January 18341,2 and baptized at St Mary's Church, Newington, SurreyG, on 17 June 1840.1 He died aged 73 at home at 108 Lower Kennington Lane, Lambeth, LondonG, on 8 August 1907.3,4 He married first in St Mary, NewingtonG, on 20 February 1855, Mary Ann Gardner, daughter of Thomas Gardner.5,6,7 She was born in Croydon, SurreyG, in about 18292 and died in LambethG in 1886.8 He married second at St Mary Magdalen Church, Bermondsey, LondonG, on 16 August 1891, Harriet Coe.9,10,11 She was born in Spexhall, SuffolkG, in about 184912 and died aged 79 in LambethG in 1928.13
In 1851 Samuel was living at 11 Augustus Row, Bermondsey, SurreyG, in the household of his widowed mother Emmeline, and was recorded in the census as Samuel J Sackett, a boot maker's apprentice, aged 17 and born in Bermondsey, Surrey.14
In 1871 he was living at 24 Saville Place, Lambeth Walk, Lambeth, SurreyG, and was recorded as Samuel John Sackett, a newsagent, head of household, married, aged 37, and born in Bermondsey. Living with him were his wife Mary Ann, aged 41, and born in Croydon, and their children, Mary, 13, Jane, 10, and Edith, aged three.15
In 1881 he was living at 20A Saville Place, Lambeth, SurreyG, and was recorded as Sam J. Sackett, a bookseller, head of household, married, aged 48, and born in Bermondsey. Living with him were his wife Mary Ann, aged 52, and born in Surrey, and their children, Edith, 15, and Maud, aged seven. Also in the household was a male boarder.16
In 1891 he was living in lodgings at 108 Lower Kennington Lane, Lambeth, LondonG, and was recorded as Samuel J Sackett, a retired bookseller, a widower, aged 56 and born in Ramsgate. Also lodging there was Harriett Coe, 41, who was to become Samuel's second wife later that year.17
In 1901 Samuel was living at 108 Lower Kennington Lane, Lambeth, LondonG, and was recorded in the census as Samuel J Sackett, a self-employed umbrella maker, head of household, married, aged 67, and born in Bermondsey. Living with him was his second wife Harriet, aged 51, a dress maker, and born in Spexhall, Suffolk.18
Administration of Samuel's estate was granted on 23 August 1907 to his widow Harriet. His estate was valued at £61.19
In 1921 Samuel's widow Harriet was living at 108 Lower Kennington Lane, LambethG, and was recorded in the census as Harriet Sackett, a self-employed umbrella repairer, a widow, aged 71.20
