John Blakeley Sackett, son of Samuel Sackett and Sally Denison, was born in Verona, Oneida County, New York StateG, on 18 December 1820.1 He died aged 76 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York StateG, on 19 June 18971,2 and baptized in New York StateG on 5 September 18213 and was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, Erie County, New York StateG.4,5 He married first in Rome, Oneida County, New York StateG, on 12 October 1844, Mary B Lincoln, daughter of Gilman Lincoln and Sally Cady.1 Mary was born in OhioG on 18 September 1823.4 She died aged 72 in East Aurora, Erie County, New York StateG, on 9 June 1896 and was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, East AuroraG.4 He married second on 18 March 1897, Mary (Balcom) French. Mary was born in 1840.6 She died aged about 80 in 1920 and was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, BuffaloG.4

Death Of A Prominent Citizen Occurred This Morning.
Well Known City and County Official Died of Heart Failure at His Home in Auburn Avenue.
The death of the Hon. John B. Sackett, ex-Treasurer and ex-Postmaster of Buffalo, occurred at his home, No. 68 Auburn Avenue, at 7:30 o'clock this morning.
Death was due to heart failure, caused by an affection of the liver from which he has been suffering for the past two weeks.
John B. Sackett had been a resident of Buffalo since 1852, and has, since that time been closely identified with the city's interests. He has been a popular man and held many public offices, both elective and appointive. His first position in Buffalo was as principal of a school at Black Rock. now known as School No. 18, and in 1854 he was transferred to No. 4 School, where he remained for nine years. It was then that he was elected Superintendent of Public Instruction. After serving the two years for which he was elected, he returned to No. 4 School as principal. In 1878 he was elected from the Second Ward as Alderman, and was made during his term, President of the Common Council. 1879 he was made chairman of the Committee on Schools. At this time he became closely associated with ex-President Grover Cleveland, and urged his acceptance for the nomination of Mayor. He worked loyally and faithfully for Mr. Cleveland, assisting in organizing the Buffalo Democratic Club, of which he was made president. After Mr. Cleveland's election to the Presidency, he appointed Mr. Sackett Postmaster of Buffalo. This was in 1887. In 1890 the Democratic County convention nominated Mr. Sackett for County Treasurer, an office to which he was elected.
Since the expiration of his office as County Treasurer Mr. Sackett has retired from public life, holding only his office as president of the Masonic Life Association of Western New York. His home was in East Aurora, until three months ago, when his marriage to Mrs. H. L. French was announced. It was a romantic marriage, the two having been betrothed in their youths and having been separated. Since then Mr. Sackett and his wife have lived at No. 68 Auburn Avenue.
Mr. Sackett was very prominent in Masonic circles. He was Worshipful Master of Ancient Landmarks Lodge, and three times was made Illustrious Master of the Grand Lodge of the State. 1647. John B. Sackett, 1820–1897, of Westfield, Mass., son of (694) Samuel and Sally Donelson Sacket, was married, Oct. 12, 1844, at Rome, N. Y., to Mary B. Lincoln, daughter of Gilman Lincoln and his wife Sally ___. On Mar. 18, 1897, three months previous to his death, Mr. Sackett was married to his second wife, Mrs. Mary R. French. The following is copied from the Buffalo Evening News of June 19, 1897:
John B. Sackett , ex-Postmaster and ex-County Treasurer, one of the prominent citizens of Buffalo, died suddenly this morning of congestion of the liver.
Mr. Sackett lived at 68 Auburn Avenue. His age was 76 years.
John B. Sackett was born at Verona, Oneida County, in 1827. When a young man he came to Buffalo. Mr. Sackett had been a teacher and a superintendent of schools at Trenton, Oneida County, and continued that avocation as principal of the school at Black Rock, later known as School 18. By the incorporation of Black Rock with Buffalo, Mr. Sackett became a teacher in the schools of Buffalo, and in 1854 was transferred to School 4, where he taught for nine years. He was then elected Superintendent of Schools, and at the expiration of his term two years later, became superintendent of School 4.
Mr. Sackett was elected Alderman from the Second Ward in 1878, and that year was president of the Common Council. In 1879 he was chairman of the committee on schools. He has always been a zealous Democrat and an earnest supporter and friend of Grover Cleveland. He was one of the first who induced Mr. Cleveland to accept the nomination for Mayor of Buffalo. He assisted in the organization of the Buffalo Democratic Club, and was for a time, its president.
For years Mr. Sackett has been very prominent in the affairs of the Masonic fraternity, and the esteem entertained for him by his brethren has on several occasions been manifested by the high honors conferred on him. He has occupied the exalted positions of Deputy Grand Master for this district of the State, Assistant Grand Lecturer, Worshipful Master of the Ancient Landmarks Lodge, and thrice Illustrious Master of the Grand Council of the State of New York. At the time of his death he was a member of Queen City Lodge, Keystone Chapter and Council, Hugh DePayne Commandery. He was president of the Masonic Life Association of Western New York, which office he filled until the time of his death.
On March 6, 1887, President Cleveland, at the request of a large majority of the citizens of Buffalo, appointed Mr. Sackett Postmaster of Buffalo, which office he held until July 1, 1890. The press, both Democratic and Republican, indorsed his appointment in the highest terms. In the Democratic convention of 1890 he was nominated for County Treasurer by acclamation, and he was elected.

Rhoda Sackett, daughter of Solomon Sackett and Hulda Webster, was born in Sandisfield, Berkshire County, MassachusettsG, on 12 December 1817.1,2 She died aged 89 in North Canaan, Litchfield County, ConnecticutG, in 1907 and was buried at the Lower Cemetery, North CanaanG.4,5,6 She married in Norfolk, Litchfield CountyG, on 16 May 1838, Daniel R Spaulding, widower of her sister Mary.1,3 Daniel was born in ConnecticutG in July 1815.7 He died aged 90 in Canaan, Litchfield CountyG, on 17 September 1904 and was buried at the Lower Cemetery, North CanaanG.8,9,10

Solomon Sackett, son of Solomon Sackett and Hulda Webster, was born in Sandisfield, Berkshire County, MassachusettsG, on 24 May 1823.1,2,3 He died aged 80 in Colebrook, Litchfield County, ConnecticutG, on 19 February 19041,4 and was buried at the Center Cemetery, ColebrookG.7 He married at the Congregational Church, SandisfieldG, on 20 November 1847, Melissa Fargo.1,5,6 Melissa was born on 12 August 1827.8 She died aged 82 in Colebrook, Litchfield CountyG, on 30 September 1909 and was buried at the Center Cemetery, ColebrookG.9

Solomon Sackett, second son of Solomon Sackett, was born in Sandisfield, Mass., May 24, 1823. He was reared on his father's farm, and educated at the common school. In about the year 1853 he commenced traveling as a salesman for Winsted manufacturers, which business he continued until about three years ago. In November, 1847, he united in marriage with Melissa Fargo, and they have three children, as follows: Grove, who resides in Chicago, in the interest of the William L. Gilbert Clock Company; George, who has been in the Winsted Savings Bank for seven years; and Frank, who is employed by the William L. Gilbert Clock Company. Mr. Sackett has led an active life, and is one of the substantial citizens of the town. He is a present selectman of the town, and was a representative in 1870.
