Birthabout 1848, New York StateG,1,2
Death30 June 1894, Hanover, Chautauqua County, New York StateG,3,4
Harriet N Sackett, daughter of Theron Sackett and Flora Blake, was born in New York StateG about 1848.1,2 She died aged about 46 in Silver Creek, Hanover, Chautauqua County, New York StateG, on 30 June 1894.3,4
In 1850 Harriet was living in Hanover, Chautauqua County, New York StateG, in the household of her parents Theron and Flora, and was recorded in the census as Harriet Sackett, aged two and born in New York.5
In 1860 she was living in HanoverG in the household of her father Theron and stepmother Catharine, and was recorded as Harriet Sackett, aged twelve.6
In 1870 she was living in HanoverG in the household of her father Theron, and was recorded as Hattie Sackett, at home, aged 22.7
In 1880 she was living in HanoverG in the household of her father Theron, and was recorded as Hattie Sacket, aged 30. According to the census record she suffered from heart disease while her sister Julie suffered a spinal cord disability. Hattie's later death record suggests that she would have been the sister with the spinal disability.8
Harriet made her will on 31 January 1894. Her sister Julia M Sackett was to receive all her real and personal estate and was named as executrix. Next of kin named in court were sisters, Julia M Sackett of Smiths Mills, New York, and Ann Wood of W Natcheso, Klickitat County, Washington, and brother Norman Sackett of Chaseburg, Vernon County, Wisconsin. The will was proved on 13 October 1894 at the Surrogate's Court, Mayville, Chautauqua CountyG, Julia M Sackett as executrix to administer the estate.9
The unusual circumstances of Harriet's death made the news throughout the country, the story being repeated in dozens of local newspapers across the United States from Oregon to New York to Texas, and across the border in Canada.

Harriet's obituary
Eccentric Sisters.
One of Them Died Under Sweltering Covers.
A Foot of Furs on Her Bed and the Outdoor Temperature 90 in the Shade.
Silver Creek, July 2.—(Special.)—Harriet Sackett, an eccentric maiden lady, died at her home near Smith's Mills Sunday. Thirty years ago she and her sister Julia, then young women, went to bed and refused to get up. They were cared for many years by their mother, but she died and then a singular old man, a distant relative, waited upon them. Three or four years ago he died and Julia arose from her bed and once more took up her household duties. Harriet became paralyzed and one side of her body withered to a skeleton. She was always cold and insisted upon being covered with everything available. Even sheep skins were placed over her head and body. Sunday night while the thermometer registered 90 in the shade she expired under a load of furs and bed clothes, which was actually a foot thick. Coroner Starring was notified and issued a burial certificate. The sisters were not in poverty, having inherited considerable property. They have relatives who are thrifty and respected citizens, with whom they were not on good terms. They were daughters of Theron Sackett, who died about 10 years ago.
