Emma Crow Spain, daughter of Thomas Spain and Harriet Crow Jarman, was born in Margate, Kent^G, in 1829 and baptized at St John in Thanet^G on 12 April 1829.¹ She died aged 85 in Penshurst, Victoria, Australia^G, on 22 November 1914^2,3 and was buried at Boram Boram Cemetery, Penshurst^G.³ She married in Ramsgate, Kent^G, on 29 January 1849, George Clark, son of James Clark and Catherine Twist.^4,5,6,7 George was born in Ramsgate^G in 1828 and baptized at St Lawrence in Thanet^G on 6 April 1828.⁸ He died aged about 78 in Penshurst^G on 15 April 1907⁹ and was buried at Boram Boram Cemetery^G.⁹
     In 1841 Emma was living in Ramsgate, Kent^G, in the household of her parents Thomas and Harriet, and was recorded in the census as Emma Spain, aged ten and born in Kent.¹⁰
     In 1851 she was living at Sayers Rents, St Lawrence in Thanet, Kent^G, in the household of her husband George, 24, a labourer, and was recorded as Emma Clark, aged 22 and born in St John's, Margate.¹¹
     George and Emma emigrated to Victoria, Australia^G, aboard the ship Shand, arriving at Port Fairy on 21 January 1855. They first settled in Hamilton, Victoria, before moving to Penshurst, Victoria, where George built a house on the corner of Martin and Cobb Streets.¹²
