Emma Crow Spain, daughter of Thomas Spain and Harriet Crow Jarman, was born in Margate, KentG, in 1829 and baptized at St John in ThanetG on 12 April 1829.1 She died aged 85 in Penshurst, Victoria, AustraliaG, on 22 November 19142,3 and was buried at Boram Boram Cemetery, PenshurstG.3 She married in Ramsgate, KentG, on 29 January 1849, George Clark, son of James Clark and Catherine Twist.4,5,6,7 George was born in RamsgateG in 1828 and baptized at St Lawrence in ThanetG on 6 April 1828.8 He died aged about 78 in PenshurstG on 15 April 19079 and was buried at Boram Boram CemeteryG.9
In 1841 Emma was living in Ramsgate, KentG, in the household of her parents Thomas and Harriet, and was recorded in the census as Emma Spain, aged ten and born in Kent.10
In 1851 she was living at Sayers Rents, St Lawrence in Thanet, KentG, in the household of her husband George, 24, a labourer, and was recorded as Emma Clark, aged 22 and born in St John's, Margate.11
George and Emma emigrated to Victoria, AustraliaG, aboard the ship Shand, arriving at Port Fairy on 21 January 1855. They first settled in Hamilton, Victoria, before moving to Penshurst, Victoria, where George built a house on the corner of Martin and Cobb Streets.12
