Charles Lawrence Sackett, son of Hobart Joseph Sackett and Mary A Ryan, was born in New Haven, ConnecticutG, on 18 November 1894.1,2 He died aged 76 in East Haven, ConnecticutG, on 18 May 1971.3,4 He married in New HavenG on 21 November 1923, Florence Riley, daughter of Thomas J Riley and Minerva E Fairchild.5 Florence was born in ConnecticutG in about 1903.6 She died aged 48 in New HavenG on 16 August 1952.7
     In 1900 Charles was living at State Street, New HavenG, in the household of his parents Hobart and Mary, and was recorded in the census as Charles Sackett, aged five and born in Connecticut.8
     In 1910 he was living in New HavenG in the household of his parents Hobart and Mary, and was recorded as Charles Sackett, aged 15.9
     Charles completed a World War I draft registration card on 5 June 1917. He was then single, aged 22, and was employed as an assembler at A C Gilbert Company in New Haven. He was living at 1230 State Street, New HavenG.1
     Charles served in the US Army in the First World War, enlisting at New Haven on 24 May 1918 in the 316th Infantry. He sailed to France with his Company on the troopship USS Agamemnon, arriving at Brest on 18 July 1918. His unit went into action on 26 September in the Battle of Argonne Forest, the "deadliest American battle in WWI". On the third day of battle, he suffered wounds to his left leg and left arm, necessitating nine months' hospitalisation. He was treated in three base hospitals in France before returning to New York on the troopship USS George Washington on 23 November 1918, then spending seven months in hospital in Cape May, New Jersey. He was discharged from service at Camp Devens, Massachusetts, on 18 June 1919. A military questionnaire, completed in New Haven on 4 August 1919, indicated that Charles was unable to close his left hand and could not resume his former duties as a milling machine operator.10
     In 1920 he was living in New HavenG in the household of his widowed mother Mary, and was recorded as Charles Sackett, an assembler in a toy shop, single, aged 24 and born in Connecticut.11
     In 1930 he was living in East Haven, New Haven CountyG, and was recorded as Charles Sackett, millwright in a toy factory, head of household, aged 36 and born in Connecticut. Living with him were his wife Florence, 27, and their children, Barbara, 3, Minerva, nearly 2, and Marion, aged ten months. Also in the household was Florence's sister Minerva Riley, 17.12
     In 1940 he was living in Woodbridge, New Haven CountyG, and was recorded as Charles Sackett, a caretaker, head of household, aged 46. He owned his home. Living with him were his wife Florence, 36, and their children, Barbara, 13, Jean, 12, Marian, 10, Patricia, 9, Charles, 7, Hobert, 6, Katherine, 5, Richard, 3, and Elizabeth, aged one. Florence's brother John, 23, was also in the household.13
