James K Sackett, son of Chauncey Sackett and Susan Kennedy, was born in Branch County, MichiganG, in December 1840.1,2 He died aged 82 at the Michigan Soldiers Home, Grand Rapids, Kent County, MichiganG, on 19 February 1923 and was buried at the Soldiers Home Cemetery, Grand RapidsG, on 21 February 1923.3 He married on 2 November 1865, Elizabeth R Robinson, daughter of Peters Robinson and Mary A Calkins.4 Elizabeth was born in North Hampton, Clark County, OhioG, on 23 May 1846.2,5,4 She died aged 76 in Haigler, Dundy County, NebraskaG, on 8 May 1923 and was buried at Haigler CemeteryG.5
     In 1850 James was living in Batavia, Branch County, MichiganG, in the household of his father Chauncey and stepmother Samantha, and was recorded in the census as James Sackett, aged nine and born in Michigan.6
     In 1860 he was living in Sherman, St Joseph County, MichiganG, in the household of A C Vanvlest, 45, a farmer, and his wife Belinda, 42, and was recorded as James Sacket, a laborer, aged 19.7
     James, then of Sturgis, St Joseph County, MichiganG, served the Union during the American Civil War, enlisting at Sturgis on 8 August 1862. He served in Company E, Michigan 19th Infantry Regiment and was mustered out at Washington, DC, on 10 June 1865. He spent 30 days as a prisoner of war in the notorious Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia.8,9
     In 1870 he was living in Batavia, Branch County, MichiganG, and was recorded as James K Sackett, a farmer, aged 29. Living with him were his wife Elizabeth, 24, and their children, Lewis, 4, Calvin, 2, and Madison, aged six months.10
     In 1880 he was living in BataviaG and was recorded as James K Sackett, a farmer, head of household, aged 39. Living with him were his wife Elizabeth, 34, their children, Lewis, 13, James, 12, Madison, 10, Frank, 6, Abram, 4, and Milton, aged ten months, and their adopted daughter Hattie Rosenbrook, aged 13.11
     James moved sometime before 1889 to Cheyenne County, KansasG, where he was assessed for a Civil War veteran's pension.9
     In 1900 he was living in Eureka, Cheyenne County, KansasG, and was recorded as James Sackett, a farmer, head of household, aged 59. He owned his farm free of mortgage. Living with him were his wife Elizabeth, 54, and their unmarried children, Carl, 24, Milton, 20, and Henry, aged 17.12
     In 1910 James was living at the Michigan Soldiers Home, Grand Rapids, Kent County, MichiganG, and was recorded in the census as James K Sackett, an orderly, aged 68.13
     James was admitted to the Soldiers Home sometime before 1908 and was listed as an inmate there in the Grand Rapids City Directory each year from then until 1920.14 He was receiving a veteran's pension as an army invalid at least from 1907, the order being varied in 1913 so that half the pension was to be paid to his wife Elizabeth, citing his desertion from 4 July 1901.15
     In 1910 James's wife Elizabeth was living at Haigler, Dundy County, NebraskaG, and was recorded as Elizabeth Sackett, a widow [sic] aged 63. She owned her home free of mortgage. Her unmarried son Carl, 36, was living with her.16
     In 1920 Elizabeth was living in HaiglerG and was described as Elizabeth Sackett, head of household, a widow [sic] aged 73. She owned her home free of mortgage. Her unmarried son Carl, 44, was living with her. An entry for her son Henry, 37, also unmarried, was recorded but crossed through on the census return.17
