Arthur Digerson Sackett, monumental mason and Ramsgate town councillor, son of Henry Digerson Sackett and Mary Bird Sackett, was born in Thanet, KentG, on 28 April 1865.1,2 He died aged 82 at Brennan Nursing Home, Ramsgate, KentG, on 20 December 1947.3,4 He married at St George, RamsgateG, on 20 December 1898, Florence Sackett, daughter of Jeremiah Sackett and Mary Ann (Butler) Redman.5,6 Arthur and Florence were second cousins, both being great-grandchildren of Jeremiah and Sarah (Hodgeman) Sackett.
In 1871 Arthur was living at 21 Liverpool Lawn, Ramsgate, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Arthur D Sackett, aged 5 and born in Ramsgate, son of Henry D Sackett.7
In 1891 he was living at 23 Liverpool Lawn, RamsgateG, in the household of his parents Henry and Mary, and was recorded as Arthur D Sackett, a stone worker, single, aged 25 and born in Ramsgate.8
Arthur was a joint executor, with his mother, of his father's will, proved at Canterbury on 15 March 1897. His father's personal estate was valued at £1,390.9
In 1899 Arthur was a monumental mason, working in stone and marble, at premises in Broad Street, RamsgateG. He was living at Grove Road, Ramsgate.10
In 1901 he was living at Terncot, Ellington Road, RamsgateG, and was recorded as Arthur D Sackett, a monumental mason (an employer), head of household, married, aged 36 and born in Ramsgate. Living with him were his wife Florence, aged 27 and also born in Ramsgate, their son Arthur aged one, and Mary Sackett, 71-year-old widowed mother of Arthur D Sackett.11
Arthur was listed as a monumental and general mason at Broad Street, RamsgateG, in 1903.12
In 1911 he was living at 16 Chapel Place, RamsgateG, and was recorded as Arthur D Sackett, stone mason, head of household, aged 45 and born in Ramsgate. Living with him were his wife Florence, 36, and their children, Arthur, 11, and Florence, aged eight.13
By 1913 he had moved his business premises to Church Hill and 16 Chapel Place, RamsgateG, and was there in 1918.14,15 He was then living at 44 Grove Road, RamsgateG.16,17,18
In 1918 and 1922 Arthur was an elected councillor for the West Central Ward on the Ramsgate Town Council.19,20,21,22
In 1921 he was living at 44 Grove Road, RamsgateG, and was recorded as Arthur Digerson Sackett, a monumental mason, an employer, head of household, aged 56. Living with him were his wife Florence, 47, and their daughter Florence, aged 18.23
At the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, Arthur and Florence were living at 40 Warten Road, RamsgateG. Arthur was a master monumental mason. Their daughter Florence was living with them.24
Arthur left a will which was proved on 13 April 1948 by his son Arthur and daughter Florence. His estate was valued at £924.25
