Professor Clement Clarke Moore, son of Bishop Benjamin Moore and Charity Clarke, was born on 15 July 1779.1 He died aged 83 on 10 July 1863.1
Prof. Clement Clark Moore was a graduate of Columbia College and became a noted Greek Scholar. For many years he was a professor in the General Theological Seminary in New York City, and gave to that institution the plot of ground on which it stands. In addition to compiling the earliest Hebrew and Greek lexicon published in this country, he wrote several prose works and a volume of poems. The most noted of the latter is that matchless child lore poem, "A visit from St. Nicholas," beginning:
