Richard Sackett, yeoman, gentleman of East Northdown, son of Richard Sackett and Martha Tomlin, was baptized at St John in Thanet, KentG, on 16 April 1717.1 He died aged about 72 in St John in ThanetG on 23 August 17892 and was buried at St Peter in ThanetG on 27 August 1789.5,6 He married at Eastwell, KentG, on 25 July 1745, Hannah Tritton.3,4 Hannah was born about 1720.7 She died aged about 53 and was buried at St Peter in ThanetG on 29 July 1773.8,6
Richard was named as a beneficiary in his father's will made in St John in ThanetG on 28 October 1730. He was to inherit his father's extensive estates in Northdown, St John's and elsewhere.9
Richard was appointed administrator of the estate of his sister Susanna Sackett by letters of administration granted at the Prerogative Court of CanterburyG on 20 April 1741. He would have inherited his sister's fortune, their mother having renounced any claim.10
Richard made his will in East Northdown, St John's, ThanetG, on 4 August 1789, naming as beneficiary his granddaughter Sarah Cramp.11 Both of Richard's children had died some years earlier, his son Tritton at the age of 30 and his daughter Susannah at the age of 25. Richard left his extensive estates in trust for his granddaughter Sarah (Susannah's daughter) to inherit when she or her husband Robert Tomlin reached 21 years of age. Sarah was 17 at the time her grandfather made his will and had married Robert Tomlin a few days earlier. Richard appointed as trustees his cousin Sackett Wood and a friend John Abbott.
The extent of Richard's estates is detailed in a section of the will which provides for reversion to other beneficiaries in the event of Sarah's dying without living children. Richard owned at least six houses, with farmlands and a number of cottages. His houses included "my Mansion House wherein I now dwell and have for many years dwelt", the Manor of Dane Court occupied by his son-in-law Peter Cramp, and Sackett's Hill house and farm, occupied by a yeoman farmer, John Cleveland.
