Myer Sacofsky, also known by his Hebrew given names Dov Ber, son of Louis Sacofsky and Rose/Florence Frankel, was born in Ekaterinoslav (now Dnipro, Ukraine), RussiaG, on 18 July 1874.1,2 He changed his name to Myer Sackett after immigrating to the United States. He died aged 87 in Los Angeles, CaliforniaG, on 5 February 1962.3 He married in Rhode IslandG on 20 February 1899, Rebecca H Robinson.4 Rebecca was born in Tavrick, RussiaG, on 25 January 18795 and died aged 74 in Los AngelesG on 12 July 1953.6
Myer immigrated to the United States from Russia, making the Atlantic crossing on the California from Hamburg, Germany, and arriving at Boston, MassachusettsG, on 14 August 1895. He was the first of his family to immigrate, with his parents and brothers and sisters following in the next year.7
In 1905 Myer was living at Osborn Street, Brooklyn, New York CityG, and was recorded in the census as Meyer Sackett, tailor, head of household, aged 30. Living with him were his wife Rebecca, 26, and their children, Bennie, 5, Ruth, 4, and Florence, aged two. There were two male boarders in the household.8
Myer removed to Bridgeport, Connecticut, by 1908 when he was listed in the Bridgeport City Directory as a partner in the firm of Sackett Bros (Myer, Harry, Harris and Samuel Sacofsky), tailors, trading at 32 P O Arcade and 1986 Main, BridgeportG. Myer was living at 103 James Street. In 1910 he was also engaged in a dry goods business with his brother Harry. They used the name Sackett for the dry goods business while continuing to use Sacofsky for the tailoring business.9
In 1910 he was living at 44 Highland Avenue, Bridgeport, Fairfield County, ConnecticutG, and was recorded as Myer Sackett, tailor and dry goods, head of household, aged 34. He rented his home. Living with him were his wife Rebecca, 30, and their children, Benjamin, 10, Ruth, 8, Florence, 6, Minnie, 4, and Bernard, aged eight months.10
Myer became a United States citizen on 4 October 1912 by grant of the Superior Court of Fairfield County, Connecticut, having declared his intention to become a US citizen on arrival in the United States in 1895. He also formally changed his name from Meyer Sacofsky to Myer Sackett at the Bridgeport Court. He was then living at 1223 Park Avenue, BridgeportG, with his wife Rebecca and their children, Benjamin, Ruth, Florence, Minnie, and Bernhard.11
From 1913 Myer operated his own business, specializing as a ladies' tailor. He was listed in the Bridgeport Directory form 1913 to 1919 working from his home at 1223 Park Avenue, BridgeportG, in 1920 at 114 James, and in 1921 at 176 Brewster.12
Myer completed a World War I draft registration card on 12 September 1918. He was aged 45, a naturalized citizen and employed as a guard for the Bullard Company. He was living at 1223 Park Avenue, Bridgeport, Fairfield County, ConnecticutG, with his wife.13
Myer was a witness to his brothers Samuel and Harry's petitions for naturalization in 1918.
In 1920 he was living at James Street, BridgeportG, and was recorded as Meyer Sackett, tailor, head of household, aged 45. Living with him were his wife Rebecca, 40, and their children, Benjamin, 21, Ruth, 18, Florence, 16, Minnie, 14, Bernard, 11, and Harold, aged four.14
In 1930 he was living at Stratford Avenue, BridgeportG, and was recorded as Myer Sackett, tailor, head of household, aged 55. Living with him were his wife Rebecca, 50, and their children, Bernard, 21, and Harold, aged 14.15
In 1932 Myer and Rebecca were living at 421 Catherine, BridgeportG. In 1936 they were at 954 Stratford Avenue, Bridgeport.12
In 1940 he was living at Park Avenue, BridgeportG, and was recorded as Meyer Sackett, tailor, head of household, aged 65. His wife Rebecca, 64, was living with him. There was also a male lodger in the household.16
