Samuel Sacofsky, also known by his Hebrew given names Nachem Simon, son of Louis Sacofsky and Rose/Florence Frankel, was born in Ekaterinoslav (now Dnipro, Ukraine), RussiaG, on 15 October 1879.1,2,3,4 He changed his name to Samuel Sackett after immigrating to the United States. He died aged 93 in New Haven, ConnecticutG, on 23 July 19735,6 and was buried at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Association Cemetery, FairfieldG.7 He married first in about 1902, Rebecca Lipsher.8 Rebecca was born in Kiev, RussiaG, on 10 May 1885.9 She had immigrated from Russia in the early 1890s.1 She died aged 40 on 20 January 1926 and was buried at the Congregation B'Nai Israel Cemetery, FairfieldG.10 He married second in about 1931, Lena ___.11
     In 1900 Samuel was living at Watkins Street, Brooklyn, New York CityG, in the household of his parents Louis and Rose, and was recorded in the census as Samuel Sacofsky, a tailor, aged 21 and born in Russia.12
     Samuel removed to Bridgeport, Connecticut, by 1907, when he was listed in the Bridgeport City Directory as a tailor. In 1908 he was a partner in the firm of Sackett Bros (Myer, Harry, Harris and Samuel Sacofsky), tailors, trading at 32 P O Arcade and 1986 Main, BridgeportG. Samuel was living with his parents at 56 Highland Avenue. In 1910 he also operated a clothes cleaning business from his home at 2008 Main. He was listed in the directory under both Sacofsky and Sackett.13
     In 1910 he was living at Main Street, Bridgeport, Fairfield County, ConnecticutG, and was recorded as Samuel Sackett, a tailor, head of household, aged 31. He rented his home. Living with him were his wife Rebecca, 25, and their children, Helen, 6, and Theodore, aged four.14
     In 1913 Sackett Brothers, clothing manufacturers and tailors, now comprising Harris, Harry, and Samuel, had premises at 983 State, BridgeportG. Samuel was living at 44 Highland Avenue with his brothers Harris and Harry. In 1914 Samuel and his brother Harry were in business as grocers at 666 Harral Avenue, Bridgeport. Samuel was listed as a tailor in 1919, living at 1533 Stratford Avenue, and from 1920 living at 430 Connecticut Avenue.13
     Samuel completed a World War I draft registration card on 12 September 1918. He was then aged 38, and was living at 791 Lindley Street, BridgeportG, with his wife Rebecca. He was employed as a tailor.15
     Samuel became a naturalized US citizen by grant of the Fairfield County Superior Court at Bridgeport on 24 September 1918, having declared his intention to become a US citizen on 18 September 1914. In 1918 he was living at 791 Lindley Street, BridgeportG, with his wife Rebecca and their children, Helen and Sidney. Samuel's brother Harry petitioned at the same court. Their brother Myer was a witness to the petitions.16
     In 1920 he was living at Connecticut Avenue, Bridgeport, Fairfield County, ConnecticutG, and was recorded as Samuel Sackett, a gentlemens tailor, head of household, aged 41. He owned his home on a mortgage. Living with him were his wife Rebecca, 34, and their children, Helen, 17, and Sidney, aged seven. There were two male boarders in the household including Carl Mayer who was to marry Samuel's daughter Helen.17
     In 1930 he was living at Lake Street, Stratford, Fairfield County, ConnecticutG, in the household of his daughter Helen and son-in-law Carl, and was recorded as Samuel Sackett, a tailor, a widower, aged 46. His other children, Sidney, 17, and Herbert, aged nine, were living with him.18
     In 1932 Samuel was living at 966 Stratford Avenue, BridgeportG, with his second wife Lena.13
     Samuel completed a World War II draft registration card on 27 April 1942. He was a self-employed tailor, aged 61 [actually 62], living at 69 Cameron Street, Torrington, Litchfield County, ConnecticutG.19
